How the price estimate was built
What it shows: Our default range is $528 to $1,369; 2 of 2 published ranges overlap it.
What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($824)MiddleHigher-cost states ($1,050)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $1,050 and AR the lowest at $824, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 50,000 (47%), against 60% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is 3-5 years (48%). The biggest difference from all complaints is under 3 years old: 26% against 40%.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
1,147 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
What do owners say it led to?
Among the 1,147 owner complaints naming this part, owners most often say loss of power followed.
What owners say happened after the problem. Loss of power: 18 (2%); Stalled while driving: 5 (0%).
If your car shows the signs above, get it checked before it gets as far as loss of power.
Which other parts do owners name in the same complaint?
Among the 1,147 owner complaints naming this part, car battery is named in 68% of them, more than any other part.
Other parts named in the same complaints. Car battery: 68%; Starter motor: 14%.
Owners name the car battery most often in the same complaint, which is not proof that one caused the other. Ask the shop whether it checked the car battery too, so you are not quoted twice for one visit.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 36%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 1,147 owner complaints naming this part, being towed is the outcome owners report most often.
What it shows: Towed is the largest at 57, followed by Fire reported at 26; the smallest shown is Death reported at 1.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 1,147 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2019 is the largest at 187 (16%), followed by 2015 at 185 (16%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 13 (1%).
Do alternator replacement problems track days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about alternator replacement run higher where days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more days per year with a high of 100f or more, median station; higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with days per year with a high of 100f or more, median station.
What it shows: States with more days per year with a high of 100f or more, median station tend to sit higher on the chart across 34 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station (Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, California, Nevada, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Missouri): reports of this repair run 7% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 8 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Colorado, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Connecticut): 2% above, and 4 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: California and Missouri are among the highest in days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station but report below expected; New Hampshire (72% above expected) and Connecticut (57% above expected) are among the lowest but above expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station runs 2% above what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 4% above, and the third with the most 7% above. It steps up steadily.
- For days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 5. Take out any single state and the days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station pattern still holds.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar residential electricity price and the pattern keeps about 43% of its strength, so part of it may come from residential electricity price instead of days per year with a high of 100F or more, median station.
Days above 100F push batteries, cooling systems, belts, hoses and tires past what ordinary summer heat does.
Are the parts for this repair getting more expensive, or only the labor?
The federal producer price index for new alternators, generators and regulators rose 20.1% from December 2019 to August 2026, while the consumer price index for motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together, rose 55.2% (BLS, national).
What it shows: Motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together is the largest at +55.2%, followed by New alternators, generators and regulators at +20.1%; the smallest shown is All motor vehicle parts at +17.4%.

What it shows: Carteret County, NC is the largest at 0.46, followed by Dare County, NC at 0.41; the smallest shown is Beaufort County, SC at 0.34.
If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns for parts matched to a alternator replacement since model year 2015, covering about 35,615 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
4 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
They had me pay for a repair for a new alternator-generator unit ($1500).
I have been advised if they become available I'm looking at $2,000 for an alternator.
He stated that the root cause may be the “smart alternator” system, and the only fix they offered was to cut a wire for $300.
The first dealer diagnosed a failed alternator and recommended replacement at a cost of $2,158.75.
Check your car
Our calculator puts a typical alternator replacement at $528–$1,369 for a midsize car with a new aftermarket part at a $120/hr shop. The part grade, your vehicle class and the shop's hourly rate move that range the most.
What does the alternator estimate cover?
The estimate covers the part and the labor to swap it, priced for a midsize/standard car at $120 an hour. It uses a new aftermarket alternator, so it is neither the cheapest rebuilt unit nor the dealer original.
Treat it as the middle of the road and adjust the three inputs in the calculator to match your car. A quote near either figure is normal; use the calculator to see which end your car belongs to.
How much do part grade, vehicle and shop change the price?
Each row below changes one input and leaves the other two at the default.
| Change | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Economy car (Civic, Corolla, Focus) | $489–$1,174 |
| SUV / truck (Tahoe, Ram 1500, 4Runner) | $626–$1,663 |
| Luxury / performance (BMW, Mercedes, Corvette) | $919–$2,347 |
| Remanufactured / rebuilt part | $430–$1,076 |
| OEM / dealer original part | $782–$1,956 |
| Independent shop (~$100/hr) | $489–$1,271 |
| Dealership (~$175/hr) | $636–$1,639 |
The shop rate and part grade each move the range by a few hundred dollars.
Should you buy a remanufactured or a new alternator?
A remanufactured alternator is the cheapest option in the calculator and is the most common choice. The saving comes from the part, not from skimped labor. Before you accept one, ask what warranty it carries and whether the shop covers labor if the unit fails.
An OEM alternator costs the most. It makes sense if you want the original specification, such as when you have added electrical accessories and need the replacement to supply at least the same power.
How do you know the alternator is the problem?
A weak battery and a failing alternator look alike: dim lights, slow starts, a battery warning light. Ask the shop to test the whole charging system, battery included, before replacing anything. RepairPal notes that the entire system should be tested with professional equipment, and the car retested after the swap.
If the battery light is on or the car stalls, treat it as urgent. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs on battery power alone and will eventually shut down, possibly in traffic. Have it checked the same day rather than driving until it quits.
What does the estimate leave out?
The calculator does not include taxes, fees or related repairs. Ask the shop whether the quote covers these:
- Serpentine belt: replacing the alternator means removing it, so ask whether the belt is worn enough to replace now.
- Battery cables: corroded or damaged cables are commonly swapped at the same time.
- Diagnostic fee: some shops charge for testing and credit it toward the repair.
- Hard-to-reach alternators: on some cars, suspension parts, axles, fans or a bumper must come off, which adds labor.
Ask for the old alternator back, and ask which of these items are optional and which the repair needs.
Frequently asked questions
Is the dealer always the most expensive choice?
In the calculator, yes: the dealership setting is higher than the independent shop setting. Part grade can matter as much, so compare the same part at both.
Can I replace an alternator myself?
RepairPal says it can be feasible when the alternator is easy to reach and you understand the starting and charging system. Otherwise it recommends a professional.
Why is my quote above the estimate?
Check vehicle class, part grade and whether the job needs extra parts removed. Enter those in the calculator first.
