What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($432)MiddleHigher-cost states ($550)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $550 and AR the lowest at $432, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
25 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 25 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2018 is the largest at 10 (40%), followed by 2015 at 1 (4%); the smallest shown is 2015 at 1 (4%).
Are the parts for this repair getting more expensive, or only the labor?
The federal producer price index for new alternators, generators and regulators rose 20.1% from December 2019 to August 2026, while the consumer price index for motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together, rose 55.2% (BLS, national).
What it shows: Motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together is the largest at +55.2%, followed by New alternators, generators and regulators at +20.1%; the smallest shown is All motor vehicle parts at +17.4%.
Which counties get the weather that wears this part?
FEMA's National Risk Index puts Carteret County, NC, Dare County, NC and Onslow County, NC highest for hurricane strikes, about 0.46 events a year, against 0.03 in the median county. Hurricane flooding and salt water corrode charging wiring and the alternator.
What it shows: Carteret County, NC is the largest at 0.46, followed by Dare County, NC at 0.41; the smallest shown is Beaufort County, SC at 0.34.
Does my car charge its battery the way older cars did?
EPA's Automotive Trends data show 17.2% of new vehicles in model year 2024 are gasoline engines without stop/start (the layout where a conventional alternator does the charging) against 95.5% in 2010, as mild and strong hybrids take over (sales-weighted national shares).
| Model year | Mild hybrid (alternator replaced by a starter-generator) | Strong hybrid | Gasoline without stop/start |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 | 0.0% | 0.0% | 99.8% |
| 2005 | 0.3% | 0.8% | 98.6% |
| 2010 | 0.0% | 3.8% | 95.5% |
| 2014 | 0.1% | 2.5% | 90.8% |
| 2018 | 0.4% | 1.9% | 65.5% |
| 2021 | 4.0% | 5.3% | 41.1% |
| 2024 | 5.3% | 9.5% | 17.2% |
Has the maker published a fix?
A bulletin is a repair procedure a maker sends its dealers, not a safety defect: if your maker is listed, ask the dealer whether one covers your car and quote its number.

Check your car
Our calculator's default estimate for alternator voltage regulator replacement is $224–$770, for an alternator with its regulator. A regulator-only swap on an older car with an external regulator costs far less. What moves the price most is whether your regulator sits inside the alternator or outside it.
What does alternator voltage regulator replacement cost cover?
The default estimate covers an alternator and regulator together: $80–$350 in parts and $80–$200 in labor. That's the usual job on newer cars. The regulator is built into the alternator housing, so the shop removes the belt, disconnects the wiring and lifts the whole unit out.
Once it's out, the shop either replaces the regulator inside it or fits a complete alternator. Many shops prefer the complete unit. You're already paying for the labor, and a new alternator replaces worn brushes and other parts at the same time.
The estimate leaves out a few things a quote may add. A charging-system test to confirm the fault is one. A worn belt or tensioner is another, since both are easy to replace while the belt is already off.
How much does the price change by part and shop?
The part you choose moves the price more than the shop does. An older car with an external regulator is a much cheaper job than a car where the regulator is part of the alternator. Here are the calculator's ranges by setting.
| Setting | Estimate | Parts | Labor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default: alternator + regulator | $224–$770 | $80–$350 | $80–$200 |
| Voltage regulator only (external, older) | $112–$280 | $20–$80 | $60–$120 |
| Independent shop, alternator + regulator | $202–$693 | $72–$315 | $72–$180 |
That sits inside our default range, which is wide because parts vary so much by car.
Ask which of the three jobs the quote describes. A quote that doesn't say whether it's a regulator or a full alternator can't be compared with another one.
Is it the voltage regulator, and how urgent is it?
A failing regulator usually shows up as a battery or warning light, dim or flickering headlights, or a battery that keeps going flat. Owners told NHTSA about this part too: 32% of the 25 complaints mention the car stalling or losing power.
Don't assume the regulator is the cause. A weak battery or a corroded terminal can look the same. In the NHTSA records, 48% of the complaints naming this part also name the car battery, which is why a good shop tests the battery and the charging output first.
Treat a charging problem as urgent. Driving on a failing charging system drains the battery until the car dies, and an overcharging regulator can damage the battery. If your lights are pulsing or the battery light is on, get it tested within days, not weeks.
How do you get a fair quote for alternator voltage regulator replacement?
Start with a charging-system test, then ask for a written quote that separates the part, the labor and any belt work. Ask whether the price is for a regulator or a complete alternator, and whether the alternator is new or remanufactured.
Compare at least two shops. An independent shop usually lands lower on labor, as the table above shows, though the part is what sets most of the gap. If a shop quotes far above $770 for a common car, ask them to explain the part.
Ask for the old part back. It's a simple way to confirm the work was done.
What does the estimate leave out?
Taxes, shop fees and the cost of diagnosing the problem aren't in the estimate. Some cars also need the engine's computer to relearn the charging setup after the swap, which can add time.
Cars where the regulator is controlled by the engine computer can cost more than the estimate. If a quote is much higher than the ranges above, ask the shop why. Use the calculator with your own car and shop type to see where your quote lands.
Frequently asked questions
Can you replace just the voltage regulator?
Sometimes. Older cars with an external regulator allow a regulator-only swap. On most newer cars the regulator is inside the alternator, so shops usually replace the whole unit.
Can you keep driving with a bad voltage regulator?
Only for a short time. An undercharging regulator lets the battery run down until the car stalls, and an overcharging one can damage the battery.

What is our own estimate
The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Checked against RepairPal's range ($449–$549) on 2026-10-06: our default's midpoint is 0% below the middle of that range. Methodology
