Small cars carry a higher EPA annual fuel cost median, $3,450, than SUVs at $3,100
EPA rates 491 small-car versions with a median annual fuel cost of $3,450. That is above the $3,100 median across 1,033 SUV versions. Exotic small cars pull the class up: the small-car range reaches $8,850, the highest of any class.
If you are choosing a small car to save on fuel, look up that model's own rating. The class label alone does not tell you the cost.
Kia Niro is the only SUV in EPA's lowest annual fuel costs, at $1,300
EPA rates the Kia Niro at $1,300 a year in 2025, 2026 and 2027. That puts it below every Honda Accord and Toyota Camry version in the data. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 follows at $1,600 and the 2025 Ford Escape at $1,650.
An SUV buyer can therefore land near the cheapest midsize cars on fuel, well below the SUV median.
Minivan annual fuel costs stay between $1,800 and $3,250 in EPA ratings
EPA's 22 minivan and van versions range from $1,800 to $3,250, the narrowest spread of any class. No minivan reaches the top costs that some SUVs, pickups and large cars reach.
A family choosing a minivan can plan its fuel budget without much risk of a surprise, whichever van it picks.
Pickup truck annual fuel costs start at $1,700, the highest floor with wagons
The cheapest pickup still costs more to fuel than the Kia Niro, Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.
If you need a truck, compare truck ratings with each other. Comparing one with a car will make every truck look expensive.
Toyota Prius holds EPA's lowest annual fuel cost at $1,200 for 2026 and 2027
EPA rates the 2026 Prius at 52 MPG and the 2027 at 51 MPG. Both come to $1,200 a year. The 2025 Prius rates $1,250.
For a Prius shopper, the difference between those model years is small enough that price and condition matter more than fuel cost.
