What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($53)MiddleHigher-cost states ($67)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $67 and AR the lowest at $53, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 50,000 (70%), against 60% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is 3-5 years (47%), against 35% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
194 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
25-44 mph leads at 39%.
Owners reported it most often at town speeds. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 194 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2019 is the largest at 38 (20%), followed by 2015 at 14 (7%); the smallest shown is 2023 at 6 (3%).
Are the parts for this repair getting more expensive, or only the labor?
The federal producer price index for new storage batteries rose 28.9% from December 2019 to August 2026, while the consumer price index for motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together, rose 55.2% (BLS, national).
Prices of new storage batteries, as shops buy them from makers, since December 2019, against consumer prices for motor vehicle repair. New storage batteries: +28.9%; All motor vehicle parts: +17.4%; Motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together: +55.2%.
Has this part been recalled abroad on cars that may share it?
Manufacturers filed 1 foreign recall campaigns that name battery test with NHTSA since 2015 (matched by the filing text); the latest, from Volkswagen Group of America in 2021-02.

What do owners say?
3 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
The battery had already been replaced at approximately 30,238 miles after a slow-start complaint and a failed battery test.
The battery tested 500 miles before and was good.
They said my battery tested bad and because the car only has 18k miles, it was still under warranty.
Check your car
Our calculator's default estimate for a battery test is $35–$86, a test-only visit at an independent shop. Where you go moves the price most: many parts stores test for free, and a dealer charges the most.
What does the battery test price cover?
The estimate covers a test only: someone connects a tester to the battery, reads its health and tells you whether it passes. It does not include a new battery, an install or any repair that the result leads to.
A fuller test also checks the charging system, because a weak alternator can make a good battery look dead. Ask whether the price covers the charging check or only the battery, since some places quote the cheaper one and add the other.
How much does a battery test cost by shop and service?
The shop you pick changes the price more than anything else. Here are the calculator's ranges by setting.
| Setting | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Default: test only, independent shop | $35–$86 |
| Parts store (often free) | $0–$35 |
| Dealer, test only | $86–$173 |
| Test plus standard replacement battery | $190–$363 |
The last row assumes the test fails and you buy a standard lead-acid battery with install. If your car has an AGM or stop-start battery, or an EV auxiliary battery, the test-only price in the calculator stays the same, but a replacement will cost more.
How do I know it is the battery, and how urgent is it?
A slow, labored crank, dim lights at startup, or a car that is dead after sitting points at the battery. A car that starts fine but loses power while driving points more toward the charging system. A test tells the two apart before you spend money.
A weak battery is not an emergency, but it tends to fail when it is cold or you are in a hurry. If the car already hesitates to start, test it this week. If the dash warns about the battery or charging system while you drive, get it checked the same day.
What should I ask before paying for a test?
Ask three things. Is the test free if I buy the battery here? Does it include the charging system? Can I have the result in writing?
Free parts store tests are common, but the store has a battery to sell. That does not make the result wrong, so treat a failed result as a reason to get a second reading, not as an order. A printout from one place and a matching result from another is strong enough to act on.
What does the estimate leave out?
It is a range for a typical car, not a quote for yours. Some cars need the battery removed from under a seat or in the trunk before it can be tested, which adds time. A battery that has been sitting discharged may need charging before a test is meaningful, and shops often bill that separately.
Taxes, local labor rates and any diagnostic time for a hidden electrical drain are also not included. The next step is to enter your car in the calculator and compare its range with the quote you are holding.
Frequently asked questions
Can I test the battery myself?
A basic multimeter shows resting voltage, but it cannot show how the battery performs under starting load. A load test is the check that matters, and a parts store can do it for free.
Should I test before replacing the battery?
Yes. A test can show the battery is fine and the real fault is the charging system, which a new battery will not fix.

What is our own estimate
The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Checked against RepairPal's range ($49–$72) on 2026-10-06: our default's midpoint is 0% above the middle of that range. Methodology
