What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($1,334)MiddleHigher-cost states ($1,699)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $1,699 and AR the lowest at $1,334, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 50,000 (58%). The biggest difference from all complaints is 100,000-150,000: 21% against 9%.
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is 3-5 years (38%). The biggest difference from all complaints is under 3 years old: 26% against 40%.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
80 owner complaints name this part.
Use the owners' words ("coolant or fluid leak") when you describe the problem to a shop, and ask what test they ran.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 59%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 80 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2015 is the largest at 22 (28%), followed by 2016 at 10 (13%); the smallest shown is 2023 at 1 (1%).
Which counties get the weather that wears this part?
FEMA's National Risk Index puts Grand Forks County, ND, Ward County, ND and Polk County, MN highest for cold waves, about 21.74 events a year, against 1.32 in the median county. Cold waves test the freeze protection and the heater.

Has the maker published a fix?
A bulletin is a repair procedure a maker sends its dealers, not a safety defect: if your maker is listed, ask the dealer whether one covers your car and quote its number.

My vehicle heater core has pluged up after 48,000 miles.

Check your car
Our calculator's default is $1,180–$1,890 for a heater core on a midsize car with moderate dash access (6–10 hours of labor) at a chain shop, the middle of the calculator's three shop types. The bigger job, difficult access (9–14 hours), is $1,540–$2,370 on the same car and shop.
What does the heater core estimate cover and leave out?
The range covers the heater core, hoses and coolant, plus the labor to open the dashboard and put it back. It leaves out taxes and anything a shop adds once the dash is open, so ask whether the quote includes refilling the coolant and checking the cooling system for leaks afterward.
How much do access and shop type change the price?
Every row keeps the midsize car. The access rows keep the chain shop, and the shop rows keep moderate access.
| Job | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Default: moderate access | $1,180–$1,890 |
| Standard access | $940–$1,410 |
| Difficult access | $1,540–$2,370 |
| Independent shop | $1,060–$1,690 |
| Dealership | $1,510–$2,440 |
What should I ask before approving the job?
Ask how many hours the shop books for your car, because labor is what moves the range: standard access is 4–6 hours and difficult access is 9–14. Ask whether the price is for the heater core alone or includes the hoses and coolant, so two quotes compare like for like. Then check the service bulletin and warranty cards above for your model before paying out of pocket.

What is our own estimate
The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Checked against RepairPal's range ($1,375–$1,912) on 2026-10-04: our default's midpoint is 7% below the middle of that range. Methodology
