A pre-purchase car inspection costs $100–$200 in a mid-tier state, according to the calculator above. The type of inspection moves the price most: a state safety inspection runs $10–$75, and an emissions test and an OBD scan cost differently again.

What does the car inspection cost cover, and what does it leave out?

The price buys a look at the car, not a repair. A state safety inspection checks items like brakes, lights and tires against a pass or fail list. An emissions test reads the car's computer or tailpipe output. Neither one fixes what it finds.

The estimate also leaves out retest fees, taxes and any repair the inspector says you need to pass. If your car fails, the bill grows from there. Ask up front whether a retest is free and for how long.

How much does each type of car inspection cost?

The calculator prices four kinds of inspection for a mid-tier state. Pick the row that matches why you are getting the car checked.

Inspection type Estimate
State safety inspection $10–$75
Emissions / smog test $25–$80
Pre-purchase inspection (PPI) $100–$200
OBD scan / diagnostic Free–$40

The OBD scan can be free because many shops and parts stores read warning-light codes at no charge. A code tells you where to look. It does not tell you what to replace, so treat it as a starting point.

How do you know which inspection you need?

Start with why you are asking. If your registration or sticker is due, you need the state inspection your state requires. If you are about to buy a used car, you want a pre-purchase inspection from a shop you chose, not one the seller picked.

If a warning light is on, an OBD scan is the cheapest first step.

Urgency follows the same logic. A required inspection has a deadline set by your state, so book it early. A pre-purchase check should happen before you pay, never after. A scan can wait until the light is steady, but a flashing light or a new noise should not.

How do you get a fair quote for a car inspection?

Ask three questions before you hand over keys. What exactly does the price include? Is there a retest fee if the car fails? Will you get a written report of what was found?

For a pre-purchase check, pick a shop that does not sell used cars and does not benefit from the repairs it finds. Ask what they look at: engine, brakes, suspension, tires, frame and a test drive. A report that lists only "good" or "bad" is not worth the money.

Compare any quote with the calculator range above. A quote far over the top deserves a second opinion.

What does the estimate leave out?

The calculator does not know your state's exact fee, your shop's hourly rate or how much work your particular car needs. A luxury or diesel vehicle may cost more at a pre-purchase check because the work takes longer. Confirm the final number with the shop.

Frequently asked questions

Can a shop charge for an inspection and then ask me to pay for repairs too?

Yes. The inspection fee pays for the check. Repairs are a separate quote. Ask for the findings in writing and take them to a second shop before you approve work.

Is an OBD scan the same as an inspection?

No. An OBD scan reads stored codes from the car's computer, which is why it can be free to $40. An inspection looks at the whole car against a checklist.

What is our own estimate

The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Checked against 4 established price guides on 2026-10-04: our default's midpoint is 2% below the middle of RepairPal's range ($186–$273). Methodology
