Check your car

Your VIN goes from your browser straight to NHTSA. We never receive or store it.

Collision repair cost lands at $1,050–$3,260 for moderate damage (2–4 panels) and $3,260–$8,150 for major structural damage, in our calculator at $120 an hour. Those are estimates, not quotes, so a quote far outside them is a reason to ask questions. If the car was just in a crash and something feels wrong when you drive it, get it checked before you worry about the price.

The bill moves with how many panels are hurt, whether the frame is involved, and which shop you pick. Below: what each damage level costs, why a first estimate often grows, how five published ranges compare, and what 1,333 owners who mentioned a body shop told NHTSA. To price your own car, use the calculator.

How much does collision repair cost?

Plan on $1,050–$3,260 for moderate damage. The table shows what the calculator returns at each level, for a midsize vehicle at a shop charging $120 an hour.

Damage level What it means Estimate
Minor 1–2 panels, no structural damage $350–$1,050
Moderate 2–4 panels, parts and labor $1,050–$3,260
Major Structural or frame damage, airbag deployment $3,260–$8,150
Severe Near total-loss, multiple systems affected $8,150–$16,300

The ranges are wide because "collision" covers a scuffed bumper and a bent frame. The only way to compare a quote is to know which row you're in.

If the damage is one door, our car door repair estimate is tighter. For paint damage alone, see what a scratch repair costs. Before you say yes, ask the shop which of the four rows your quote falls into.

What moves the collision repair cost the most?

Damage level comes first, and the shop's hourly rate comes second. The parts are the same at every shop, so you're mostly paying for the rate. Here's moderate damage at three shop types:

Shop type Hourly rate Moderate damage
Independent shop About $100 $990–$3,100
Default $120 $1,050–$3,260
Dealership About $175 $1,215–$3,700

For what the technician side of that rate looks like, see the BLS profile of automotive service technicians.

The vehicle matters too:

Vehicle type Moderate damage
Economy (Civic, Corolla, Focus) $960–$2,960
Default $1,050–$3,260
SUV or truck (Tahoe, Ram 1500, 4Runner) $1,140–$3,560
Luxury or performance (BMW, Mercedes, Corvette) $1,140–$3,560

Our estimate puts an SUV and a luxury car at the same figure, so ask a shop for a car-specific quote if yours has aluminum panels or a lot of sensors. If a dealer quote is your only one, get a second before you approve it.

Why does the collision repair estimate grow after the first quote?

Because a first estimate is a look from the outside. Once the shop takes panels off, hidden damage shows up, and the shop sends the insurer or you a supplement. Three owners told NHTSA how it went.

A 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee owner wrote: "I took it in to body shop and the estimated $2,000 TURNED INTO OVER $6,000 because the fins on the radiator were bent." (complaint #11090433).

One caveat, once: these are owners' own reports, not lab results, and they come from complaints that mention a body shop or collision repair, so a mention doesn't prove the repair itself was wrong. They do show how big a jump owners saw.

Published sources name the usual suspects: sensor calibration after a bumper or windshield job, paint blending into neighboring panels, and unseen bracket or absorber damage. That's their claim. For the windshield version, see what windshield calibration costs.

Ask the shop up front: "What are you most likely to find once the panels come off, and what would it add?"

Is my collision repair cost quote too high?

Compare it to the row for your damage, not to a headline range. Five published sources put a collision job anywhere from $50 to $30,000, and they measure different things. Their numbers are their opinions, but they show the spread:

Source What they priced Their range
Exautobody.com Bumper scuff and small repairs $400–$800
Dietrichscollision.com Minor collision or scratch $500–$1,500
Dietrichscollision.com Moderate (side impact, replacement panels) $1,500–$3,000
Frankandsonautobody.net Front-end collision repair $2,500–$6,000
Frankandsonautobody.net Major collision repair $2,500–$7,500

Our moderate row ($1,050–$3,260) overlaps Dietrich's moderate band. Our major row ($3,260–$8,150) sits close to Frank & Son's major figure. One shop's guide says heavy structural damage "can reach $20,000 or more." Our severe row tops out at $16,300, so a badly hurt newer car can land above our estimate.

If the quote is well above your row, ask for it itemized: parts, labor hours, paint materials, calibration and any sublet work. One shop's guide makes a fair point: "A 25% lower estimate isn't a deal, it's a different repair." So when two quotes differ a lot, ask line by line what one of them left out.

Should I pay out of pocket or file an insurance claim?

Compare the repair estimate with your deductible, then think about your premium. Shop guides commonly say to pay yourself when the estimate is close to your deductible, and one puts the rule of thumb at about 2× the deductible. Those are their rules, not ours.

If it raises your premium for a few years, the claim may cost more than it saves. Structural damage, deployed airbags or another driver change the math, and then a claim is usually the right move.

You choose the shop. One New York shop notes state law lets you pick your repair center, and you don't have to use the one your insurer suggests. Ask your insurer to confirm the rule where you live. And don't skip a safety step just to stay under a deductible.

Is my car safe to drive after collision repair?

Not if a warning light stays on or the car pulls, shakes or brakes strangely. Safety comes before price here. Of the 621 complaints that gave a speed, 25% were at 55 mph or faster and 10% were parked or under 5 mph, and the median speed was 35 mph.

On the NHTSA form, owners in these 1,333 complaints reported 638 crashes, 24 fires and 406 injuries, and 3 deaths. Many are crash reports that mention a body shop, so those numbers reflect the crash, not necessarily the repair. Still, 39% were towed.

Sort your situation into three tiers:

  • Stop driving: the car pulls hard, brakes feel different, airbag or steering warning lights are on, or you smell fuel.
  • Get it checked this week: a warning light came on after the repair, there's a new noise, or sensors like parking or lane assist don't work.
  • You have time to shop around: cosmetic damage only, with the car driving and stopping normally.

Warning lights show up in 16% of these complaints and a recall in 21%. Makers also publish repair procedures. A Subaru bulletin (12-310-21, February 2021) gives collision repair facilities guidelines for repairing and refinishing Crosstrek Hybrid models from 2015 to 2021.

Ask whether your shop follows the maker's procedures for your car. Frame damage in particular deserves a careful look: see what car frame repair costs.

What should I ask the shop before I approve collision repair?

Six questions cover most of the risk:

  1. Which damage level is this: minor, moderate, major or severe?
  2. What's the labor rate, and how many hours?
  3. Are the parts OEM, aftermarket or used, and is paint blending included?
  4. Do you calibrate any driver-assist sensors, and what does that add?
  5. What could you find once panels come off, and how will I hear about it?
  6. Can I have the old parts back?

A good shop answers these without hesitating. If they don't, that's your answer.

Before you spend a dollar

Collision repair cost comes down to three questions: how many panels are hurt, is anything structural, and which shop are you using.

Today: if the car pulls, brakes oddly or shows a warning light, stop driving it. This week: get two itemized quotes, one independent and one dealer, and match each to a damage row. Before you approve: ask what a teardown could add, and ask for a written total.

Use the calculator for your car to see your range by shop type and damage level, and see how we calculate and where the numbers come from if you want to check our work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does collision repair cost on average?

Our estimate is $1,050–$3,260 for moderate damage at $120 an hour. Minor damage runs $350–$1,050 and major structural damage $3,260–$8,150. Published sources say between $500 and $6,000 for most jobs.

Should I pay out of pocket for collision repair?

If the repair is close to your deductible, paying yourself may cost less than a premium increase. Structural damage, airbags or another driver usually point to a claim. Ask your insurer how a claim affects your rate.

Why did my body shop estimate go up?

Hidden damage is found once panels come off. One owner's $2,000 estimate became over $6,000 because radiator fins were bent (NHTSA #11090433). Ask what the shop expects to find.

Is a dealership more expensive for collision repair?

Yes. Our moderate-damage estimate is $1,215–$3,700 at a dealership (about $175 an hour), against $990–$3,100 at an independent shop (about $100 an hour).

When is a car a total loss?

Rules vary by state and insurer, so ask yours for its threshold in writing.
