What do owners say?
3 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
I lost $28,000 last year doing 1,000 Uber and Lyft rides in an electric car that's supposed to save money on gas but actually costs more than gas if you use a supercharger.
I was parking my Hyundai Kona electric car going very slow when without warning it took off going over 100 miles per hour.
I was driving the all-electric car home from work on a 3/4 charge (~75 miles remaining range) when I noticed two fast, split-second jerking motions, about 30 seconds apart.

The model you buy moves your charging bill more than the size class does.

Electric pickup running cost: EPA's class median is $1,000 a year, the highest of any body style
EPA rates electric pickups at a median of $1,000 a year to charge across 90 ratings, and no pickup in the data costs less than $850.
Range doesn't explain the gap. EPA rates the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado at 408 miles of range and $1,100 a year, while the 2025 GMC Hummer EV gets less range (289 miles) and costs $1,450. If you're shopping for a truck, the Hummer's charging bill comes from its energy use, not from its range.
Electric SUV charging costs run from $550 to $1,600 a year in EPA ratings
That's the widest spread of any class. The median is $800, the same as for large and midsize cars.
At the low end, the 2026 Tesla Model Y uses 25.6907 kWh per 100 miles. At the high end, the 2025 and 2026 Mercedes-Benz G-Class use 54 kWh per 100 miles and cost $1,200. Buying an electric SUV doesn't guarantee a low charging bill. Check the specific model's rating.
The 2026 Tesla Model Y, Mercedes G-Class and GMC Sierra cost less to charge than their 2025 versions
EPA rates the 2026 Tesla Model Y at $600 a year, compared with $650 for the 2025. The 2026 GMC Sierra is rated at $1,150, down from $1,200 for the 2025. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class drops from $1,200 for the 2026 to $1,100 for the 2027.
If you're choosing between two model years of the same EV, compare their EPA ratings, because the newer one may cost less to run each year.
Electric small cars have a higher EPA median charging cost ($850) than SUVs ($800)
EPA's median for small cars is $850 a year across 105 ratings, which is higher than the $800 median for SUVs. A smaller car doesn't automatically mean a smaller charging bill.
Electric car running cost by segment: the calculator shows $1,140 a year at the low end and $1,421 at the high end
