What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($542)MiddleHigher-cost states ($691)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $691 and AR the lowest at $542, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is 50,000-100,000 (41%). The biggest difference from all complaints is under 50,000: 38% against 60%.
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is 3-5 years (39%). The biggest difference from all complaints is under 3 years old: 21% against 40%.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
2,214 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
Which trouble codes do owners report?
P0172 System Too Rich leads at 32.
The code owners quote most is P0172. Read your own code from a scan and give the shop the exact code, not only "the light is on".
What do owners say it led to?
Among the 2,214 owner complaints naming this part, owners most often say loss of power followed.
What owners say happened after the problem. Loss of power: 93 (4%); Engine damage: 28 (1%); Stalled while driving: 16 (1%).
If your car shows the signs above, get it checked before it gets as far as loss of power.
Which other parts do owners name in the same complaint?
Among the 2,214 owner complaints naming this part, fuel pump is named in 12% of them, more than any other part.
Owners name the fuel pump most often in the same complaint, which is not proof that one caused the other. Ask the shop whether it checked the fuel pump too, so you are not quoted twice for one visit.
What did owners say they paid?
Half of the 88 owners who wrote a dollar amount gave $1,800 or less; one in ten wrote more than $6,300.
These are bills owners wrote down, often covering more than this one repair. They show how far a job can run; get written quotes for your own car.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 43%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 2,214 owner complaints naming this part, being towed is the outcome owners report most often.
What it shows: Towed is the largest at 111, followed by Fire reported at 23; the smallest shown is Injury reported at 5.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 2,214 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2018 is the largest at 450 (20%), followed by 2015 at 138 (6%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 25 (1%).
Is this repair covered by an emissions warranty?
Federal rules require carmakers to cover the catalytic converter, the emissions computer and the onboard diagnostic system for 8 years or 80,000 miles, and any part whose failure fails an emissions test for 2 years or 24,000 miles; California requires 3 years or 50,000 miles on every emission part.
| Warranty | Covers | Length |
|---|---|---|
| California, all emission parts | All emissions-related parts | 3 years or 50,000 miles |
| California, high-cost parts | Specific high-cost emission parts listed in the owner manual | 7 years or 70,000 miles |
| Federal, basic | Any part that causes an emissions failure | 2 years or 24,000 miles |
| Federal, extended | Catalytic converters, electronic emissions control unit (ECU), onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD) | 8 years or 80,000 miles |
Which engine sizes show up most in complaints about this part?

What do emissions repairs cost?
Among 46,033 California vehicles repaired to pass a Smog Check in 2025, 39.1% cost over $650 to fix and the average bill was $757.
What it shows: Over $650 is the largest at 39.1%, followed by $1 to $100 at 13.1%; the smallest shown is $501 to $650 at 8.4%.
Do fuel injector replacement problems track solo operators as a share of all auto repair businesses across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about fuel injector replacement run higher where solo operators as a share of all auto repair businesses is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that solo operators as a share of all auto repair businesses causes this repair.
Do fuel injector replacement problems track quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about fuel injector replacement run higher where quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment; higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment.
What it shows: States with more quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment tend to sit higher on the chart across 37 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment (Colorado, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, Nevada, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, Texas, Florida): reports of this repair run 16% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 8 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (Massachusetts, Maine, Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, California, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Maryland): 11% below, and 3 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Colorado and Florida are among the highest in quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment but report below expected; Maine (31% above expected) and Wisconsin (62% above expected) are among the lowest but above expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment runs 12% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 8% above, and the third with the most 19% above. It steps up steadily.
- For quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 6. Take out any single state and the quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment pattern still holds.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar solo operators as a share of all auto repair businesses and the pattern keeps about 8% of its strength, so part of it may come from solo operators as a share of all auto repair businesses instead of quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment.
Where shops lose and replace workers faster, fewer experienced technicians are available, which changes how repairs are diagnosed and redone.

| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
4 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
Honda stated "if the code comes back on they will need to replace injectors as well." the code came back in a month but now they say its off warranty and I will have to pay $1507.08 for injector replacement.
All our fuel injectors had to be replaced for a total of $2,132.
They said it just needed new spark plugs and injectors cleand, so they did the work and charged me $400.
That failure caused metal shavings to break off, damage the fuel injectors and spread throughout the entire fuel system requiring replacement at the cost of $15,000!
Check your car
Fuel injector replacement cost runs $294–$954 for a 6-cylinder engine at a shop charging $120 an hour, by our estimate. A 4-cylinder lands at $196–$636, and an 8-cylinder at $392–$1,272. Owners who wrote to NHTSA say they paid more: a midpoint of $1,700.
That gap is why this page exists. 2,624 owners have told NHTSA about fuel injectors, and the bills they describe run from $90 to $15,000. Some of that is the injector. A lot of it is everything bolted to the injector, or the damage that came first.
One safety point before the money: if you can see or smell fuel around the engine, don't drive the car. Recalls on this part warn that a fuel leak near hot engine parts can start a fire. Once it's safe, run the calculator for your car.
How much does fuel injector replacement cost?
Plan on $294–$954 for a 6-cylinder at a $120-an-hour shop, including parts and labor. Change the engine or the shop and the range moves, as this table from our calculator shows.
| Setup | Estimate |
|---|---|
| 4-cylinder (4 injectors), $120/hr | $196–$636 |
| 6-cylinder (6 injectors), independent shop, ~$100/hr | $270–$915 |
| 6-cylinder (6 injectors), $120/hr (default) | $294–$954 |
| 6-cylinder (6 injectors), dealership, ~$175/hr | $360–$1,061 |
| 8-cylinder (8 injectors), $120/hr | $392–$1,272 |
Where you go matters less than you'd think. On the same 6-cylinder, a dealership runs $90 more at the low end and $146 more at the high end than an independent shop. The hourly rate is the difference. Injector count matters more: going from 4 injectors to 8 adds about $196 at the low end and $636 at the high end.
That fits inside our 4- and 6-cylinder ranges, but it doesn't say which engine or scope it covers.
If you have one quote, get a second before you say yes. Ask both shops to name the engine, the number of injectors and whether the quote includes gaskets, seals and a fuel-system check.
Is it safe to drive with a bad fuel injector?
It depends on the symptom, and the worst ones are worth taking seriously. Owners reported 28 fires, 13 crashes and 11 injuries on the NHTSA form in the 2,624 complaints, with no deaths. That's a small share of the total, but a failed injector is a fuel-system problem, not just a performance one.
Here's how we'd sort it, based on what owners and recalls describe:
- Stop driving: fuel visible or smelling around the engine, smoke or a burning smell (4% of complaints), or the engine stalling at speed. The recall text on the Ford 1.5L engines says a cracked injector "may crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment," and that a leak near hot components can increase the risk of a fire.
- Get it checked this week: a warning light with rough running or lost power. 27% of complaints describe stalling or lost power, and 43% of the 1,145 complaints that gave a speed were at 55 mph or faster. The midpoint was 45 mph.
- Time to shop around: the car runs normally and the light is the only sign. Warning lights show up in 48% of complaints, and many have other causes, so get a code read first.
Owners also told NHTSA what happened next. Of the 2,624 complaints, 352 (13%) mention loss of power, 127 (5%) engine damage and 66 (3%) stalling while driving. 5% of them, about 1 in 20, say the car was towed.
Before you pay: ask for the trouble code and which cylinder it points to. A shop that can't tell you hasn't diagnosed it yet.
Why is fuel injector replacement cost higher for owners than the estimate?
The 106 owners who wrote in a dollar amount report a midpoint of $1,700, and the middle half fall between $1,300 and $2,287. That's well above the $294–$954 estimate, and the owner records show a few reasons.
One thing to keep in mind: these are owners' own reports, not receipts or lab results. A bill in a complaint doesn't prove what the shop replaced. Still, it's the best record we have of what people run into.
Extra parts ride along. One 2015 Honda Fit owner wrote: "AFTER ONLY 48,000 MILES I had to replace the fuel injector set, part # 16010-5r1-315 and the fuel pipe set, part # 16012-5R1-315 FOR A TOTAL COST (INCLUDING LABOR) OF $1,760.00." (complaint #11090772). The injectors weren't the whole bill. The fuel pipe set was.
Dealer quotes for a full set. A 2016 Honda Pilot owner (#11277009) wrote: "HONDA SERVICE SAYS I need to replace fuel injectors for $1500." A 2017 GMC Yukon owner (#11327317) reported being told to "replace all fuel injectors for over $2,000." Both are for larger engines with more injectors than a 4-cylinder.
Damage came first. A 2016 Kia Sorento owner described a car that "was towed to the Kia dealership in which the service advisor said the fuel injector was broken which spilled fuel into the motor causing $7,800.00 OF DAMAGE" (complaint #11265921).
Not every owner paid a lot. A 2016 Kia Sedona owner (#11288547) wrote: "I'VE ALSO HAD A fuel injector go bad $580." The lowest amount in the records is $90.
If your quote is far above the range for your engine, ask what else is on the ticket. A fuel rail, fuel pipes, a manifold gasket or a second repair could all be there. Ask the shop to itemize.
How do you know it's the injector and not something else?
Warning lights lead the list. 48% of the 2,624 complaints mention one, 27% describe stalling or lost power, 12% a coolant or fluid leak and 5% a noise. None of those points to an injector on its own.
The complaints name other parts too. Of the 2,624 complaints, the spark plug appears in 12% (324), the fuel pump in 12% (304), the head gasket in 4.8% (126), the ignition coil in 3.7% (97) and the catalytic converter in 3.5% (92). That doesn't prove one caused another. It does tell you that a misfire can have several culprits.
The worrying number is this: 19% of complaints say the dealer couldn't fix it or the repair had to be repeated. A repeat repair usually means the first diagnosis was a guess.
Ask the shop three things:
- Which code did you read, and which cylinder does it point to?
- How did you confirm the injector, not just the plug or coil?
- Are you replacing one injector or all of them, and why?
A good shop answers without hedging. If you hear "we'll start with the injectors and see," that's a reason to get a second opinion.
What should you ask before you say yes?
Ask five things, and write the answers on the quote.
- What code and which cylinder? A specific answer beats "it's the injectors."
- One injector or all? Ask why. Our estimate scales with injector count, so a full set on an 8-cylinder is the most expensive way to be wrong.
- What else is on the ticket? Fuel rail, pipes, gaskets and seals are the usual add-ons. Ask for an itemized quote.
- Is there a recall or warranty program on my VIN? If the shop hasn't checked, do it yourself.
- Can I have the old injector back? A good shop is glad to show you.
Labor is a real part of the bill. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes what automotive service technicians do and earn, and the hourly rate on your quote should look like what a shop in your area charges. Access is the other cost driver: on some engines the intake manifold has to come off, which adds hours.
What should you do this week?
Fuel injector replacement cost ranges from $294–$954 for most 6-cylinder cars, and your quote should sit near the range for your engine and shop type. If it doesn't, ask what else is on it.
This week:
- Stop driving if you see or smell fuel, smoke or stalling.
- Check your VIN for recalls at NHTSA. It's free.
- Get the trouble code and the cylinder it points to in writing.
This month:
- Get a second quote from a shop with a different hourly rate.
- Ask your dealer whether a warranty extension covers the injectors.
Run the calculator for your car to see the range for your engine and shop type before you walk into the shop. We don't take referral fees, and no shop pays us, so the numbers don't change based on who you call.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with a bad fuel injector?
It depends on the symptom. Don't drive if you see or smell fuel, see smoke or the engine stalls. Recalls warn that a fuel leak near hot parts can cause a fire. For a warning light with rough running, get it checked this week.
How long do fuel injectors last?
Owners who reported a mileage put the failure midpoint at 60,000 miles and 5 years of age. The middle half fall between 33,300 and 90,000 miles. These are complaint records, so they show when failures were reported, not how long the average injector lasts.
Is a fuel injector problem covered by a recall?
Sometimes. 8 recalls cover this part, including Ford Escape and Bronco Sport models with 1.5L engines. Check your VIN with NHTSA before paying, because a model match doesn't confirm your car is included.
Should I replace all fuel injectors at once?
Ask the shop to explain. If a code points to one cylinder, a single injector may be the right answer. If they recommend a full set, ask what test showed the others were failing. The cost rises with each injector, from $196–$636 at 4 to $392–$1,272 at 8.

What is our own estimate
The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Checked against RepairPal's range ($768–$953) on 2026-10-06: our default's midpoint is 0% above the middle of that range. Methodology
