How the price estimate was built
What it shows: Our default range is $801 to $2,056; 3 of 3 published ranges overlap it.
What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($1,241)MiddleHigher-cost states ($1,581)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $1,581 and AR the lowest at $1,241, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 50,000 (45%), against 60% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is 3-5 years (41%). The biggest difference from all complaints is under 3 years old: 24% against 40%.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
4,963 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
Which trouble codes do owners report?
P0087 Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low leads at 46.
The code owners quote most is P0087. Read your own code from a scan and give the shop the exact code, not only "the light is on".
What do owners say it led to?
Among the 4,963 owner complaints naming this part, owners most often say loss of power followed.
What owners say happened after the problem. Loss of power: 162 (3%); Stalled while driving: 115 (2%); Engine damage: 51 (1%).
If your car shows the signs above, get it checked before it gets as far as loss of power.
Which other parts do owners name in the same complaint?
Among the 4,963 owner complaints naming this part, fuel tank is named in 7% of them, more than any other part.
Other parts named in the same complaints. Fuel tank: 7%; Fuel injector: 5%.
Owners name the fuel tank most often in the same complaint, which is not proof that one caused the other. Ask the shop whether it checked the fuel tank too, so you are not quoted twice for one visit.
What did owners say they paid?
Half of the 55 owners who wrote a dollar amount gave $1,700 or less; one in ten wrote more than $9,300.
These are bills owners wrote down, often covering more than this one repair. They show how far a job can run; get written quotes for your own car.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 42%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 4,963 owner complaints naming this part, being towed is the outcome owners report most often.
What it shows: Towed is the largest at 496, followed by Injury reported at 45; the smallest shown is Death reported at 3.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 4,963 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2018 is the largest at 894 (18%), followed by 2015 at 553 (11%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 26 (1%).
Which engine sizes show up most in complaints about this part?
Among 4,887 owner complaints about this part where the VIN identifies the vehicle, 18% involve engines of under 1.6 L, against 11% of complaints about all the parts we track.
What it shows: 3.1 to 4.0 L is the largest at 23%, followed by 2.1 to 3.0 L at 22%; the smallest shown is 4.1 to 5.0 L at 1%.
Do reports of this repair follow the weather where owners live, county by county?
A moderate pattern, not a firm finding: across 104 U.S. counties with 10 or more NHTSA owner complaints about fuel pump replacement, reports run 47% above the national share in the third with the wettest climates against 7% above in the third with the driest climates. This is an association across counties, not a cause.
Reports of fuel pump replacement by county, grouped by yearly precipitation. Third of counties with the driest climates: 7% above; Middle third: 5% above; Third with the wettest climates: 47% above.
- Split the 104 counties into thirds by yearly precipitation: the third with the driest climates reports fuel pump replacement 7% above what the national share predicts, the middle third 5% above, and the third with the wettest climates 47% above.
- Take out any single county and the pattern still holds; the one it leans on most is St. Lucie County, FL.
- Weak spot: compare only counties with similar elevation and the pattern keeps about 55% of its strength, so part of it may come from that instead.
- Still open: complaint city names are matched to counties by place name, so a county with postal-neighbourhood names is undercounted, and county elevation is the height of one point, not the county average.
Weather and roads act on a car where it is driven, not on a state average, so the county map tests the same mechanism more closely.
Do fuel pump replacement problems track solo operators as a share of all auto repair businesses across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about fuel pump replacement run higher where solo operators as a share of all auto repair businesses is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that solo operators as a share of all auto repair businesses causes this repair.
Do fuel pump replacement problems track quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about fuel pump replacement run higher where quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment; higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment.
What it shows: States with more quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment tend to sit higher on the chart across 43 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment (Colorado, South Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, Nevada, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, Texas, Florida): reports of this repair run 28% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 9 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maine, Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, California, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin): 17% below, and 1 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Colorado is among the highest in quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment but reports below expected; Hawaii (48% above expected) is among the lowest but above expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment runs 16% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 6% below, and the third with the most 27% above. Most of the quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment effect sits in the third with the most.
- For quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 8,929. Take out any single state and the quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment pattern still holds.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar very hot days and the pattern keeps about 20% of its strength, so part of it may come from very hot days instead of quarterly job separations as a share of auto repair shop employment.
Where shops lose and replace workers faster, fewer experienced technicians are available, which changes how repairs are diagnosed and redone.

If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 41 recall campaigns for parts matched to a fuel pump replacement since model year 2015, covering about 12,017,057 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
4 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
It needs a new fuel pump at a cost to me of about $900.
Dealership disagrees and has indicated issue is with fuel pumps (both are being replaced) and charging me $2300.
Fuel pump failure causing emmision purge tank to fill with fuel causing $1700 repair bill.
After having truck towed to the nearest chevy/gm dealership in pecos tx, the diagnosis was a faulty fuel pump estimated cost over $800.
Check your car
Fuel pump replacement costs $801–$2,056 for an in-tank pump with standard access, covering parts of $130–$390 and labor of $100–$200 as the calculator sets them. Whether the tank has to come down, and whether your pump sits inside it, moves that range most.
What does the estimate cover, and what does it leave out?
The estimate prices one pump replacement on an in-tank pump: the part, the labor to reach it, and the work to put the tank back.
It leaves out diagnosis time, a new fuel filter, the fuel pump relay, a tank gasket and a tow if the car will not start. A relay and filter are cheap next to the pump, so ask whether the quote includes them. If it does not, you may pay a second labor charge for the same access later.
How much do pump type, tank access and vehicle type change the price?
Three settings move the number. Each row below changes one setting from the default.
| Setting | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Default: in-tank pump, standard access | $801–$2,056 |
| External pump (older cars) | $481–$1,097 |
| Difficult access, tank removal required | $962–$2,467 |
| Domestic make (GM, Ford, Chrysler) | $697–$1,742 |
The spread inside each row is wide because parts vary by model. A pump module on a luxury or import model costs far more than one for a common domestic truck, which is why the domestic row sits lower.
How do you tell it is the fuel pump, and how urgent is it?
Suspect the pump when the engine cranks but will not start, sputters at highway speed, or loses power when you accelerate. A whine from the rear seat area that grows louder is another sign.
A shop can confirm it by checking fuel pressure at the engine. Low pressure points at the pump, the relay, the wiring or a clogged filter, so ask for the pressure reading before you approve a pump. A pump that cuts out at speed is a safety issue because the engine can stall in traffic.
Do not keep driving it. Park it safely and arrange a tow rather than gamble on one more trip.
Should you buy an aftermarket pump or the original?
Aftermarket pumps usually cost less, and many are fine. On some models the pump is built into a module with the fuel level sensor, and a cheap unit can bring a wrong gauge reading back with it.
Ask which brand the shop installs and what warranty covers the part and the labor. Because the tank is dropped to replace it, a failed cheap pump means paying that labor twice unless the warranty covers it.
How do you get a fair quote?
Ask for the quote split into pump or module, filter, relay and labor, and ask whether the tank must come down on your car. That one answer decides which row of the table you are in.
Then run your car through the calculator and compare. A quote below the default row for an in-tank pump is worth asking about, since a shortcut may skip the filter or use an unproven part. A quote above it deserves a second opinion unless your car needs tank removal, where the ceiling is $2,467.
What do drivers ask about this repair?
Can I replace just the relay instead? Yes, when the pressure test shows the pump is fine. The relay is a small part and the fix costs a fraction of the pump job.
Is it safe to do myself? The fuel system holds gasoline and its vapor, so a spark can start a fire. Professionals handle it with the battery disconnected and the line depressurized, and most owners should leave it to them.
