Do fuel tank replacement problems track monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about fuel tank replacement run higher where monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers (dollars); higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers (dollars).
What it shows: States with more monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers (dollars) tend to sit higher on the chart across 40 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers (Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington, New Hampshire, Colorado, Delaware, California, Oregon, New Jersey, Arizona): reports of this repair run 9% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 6 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (Utah, West Virginia, New Mexico, Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas, Louisiana, Iowa, Arkansas, Ohio): 9% below, and 3 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Massachusetts, Washington and Colorado are among the highest in monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers but report below expected; New Mexico (26% above expected) is among the lowest but above expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers runs 8% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 8% above, and the third with the most 6% above. Most of the monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers effect sits between the lowest and the middle third.
- For monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 6. The monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers pattern leans on Utah: without it, it weakens.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar battery-electric vehicles as a share of registered cars and trucks and the pattern keeps about 9% of its strength, so part of it may come from battery-electric vehicles as a share of registered cars and trucks instead of monthly earnings of newly hired auto repair shop workers.
Higher starting pay for shop workers marks a tighter local labor market, which pushes up the labor part of every repair bill.

If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 40 recall campaigns for parts matched to a fuel tank replacement since model year 2015, covering about 702,545 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
1 complaint quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
Replacing the fuel tank completely at an estimated $2k+ is too costly especially during this pandemic and is due to faulty manufacturing.
Check your car
Fuel tank replacement runs $763–$1,493 at a dealer for a midsize car, and $625–$1,245 at an independent shop. That's our estimate, so treat a quote far outside it as a reason to ask questions. If you smell fuel or see a puddle under the car, don't wait on the price: 2,810 owners have told NHTSA about a fuel or gas tank, and 66 of those complaints reported a fire.
The fuel tank replacement calculator above gives a range for your car once you pick tank size and shop type. Below is what moves that range, what owners actually got quoted, and how to find out whether a recall or warranty extension means you shouldn't pay at all.
How much does fuel tank replacement cost?
Fuel tank replacement costs $763–$1,493 at a dealer for a midsize car (16–22 gallons, 2.5–4.5 labor hours). That is our calculator's default. Where you land inside that range depends on the part grade and the shop's hourly rate.
Tank size is the biggest lever we can measure. The same job at a dealer changes like this:
| Vehicle | Dealer estimate | Labor hours |
|---|---|---|
| Compact car (12–16 gal) | $580–$1,078 | 2–3.5 hrs |
| Midsize car (16–22 gal) | $763–$1,493 | 2.5–4.5 hrs |
| Truck / full-size SUV (22–36 gal) | $945–$2,090 | 3–6 hrs |
Bigger tanks take longer to drop and refit, and they cost more to buy. If your quote is above the top of your row, ask what else is on the ticket. The last section below tells you what to ask.
Does the shop change the price of a gas tank replacement?
An independent mechanic lands at $625–$1,245 for the midsize default, against $763–$1,493 at a dealer. You're paying for the hourly rate, not a different tank.
Owners don't often shop around, though. In the complaint files, 1,352 mention a dealer and 165 mention an independent shop. That's a count of mentions, not a market share, but it fits what owners describe: the dealer is where people go first, especially when a recall or warranty might apply.
Here's the practical split. If a recall or warranty extension could cover your car, start at the dealer, because it may be free. If neither applies, get an independent quote too.
Not sure what the shop actually diagnosed? A car diagnostic is usually cheaper than paying for the wrong part.
What have owners been quoted for a gas tank replacement?
Owners have reported quotes from $800 to $14,000 for work involving the tank, and the tank alone is rarely the whole bill. One thing to keep in mind: these are owners' own reports to NHTSA, not lab results or shop invoices, and they aren't adjusted for how many of each car were sold. They're still the best public record of what people ran into.
Here's how four owners described it, word for word:
- A 2018 Honda Accord owner at 1,860 miles: "at first they said it was bad fuel and quoted me $800 to clean the fuel tank." (complaint #11132247)
- A 2015 Dodge Durango owner at 119,300 miles: "ABOUT $2000 LATER AND A new gas tank and fuel filler neck the problem was solved." (complaint #11267900)
- A 2017 Nissan Frontier owner at 47,000 miles: "they want to charge me $1900 to replace the fuel tank and other fuel components even though the exact same issue is happening as described in the warranty enhancement for the issue." (complaint #11281054)
- A 2015 Ram 1500 owner at 66,000 miles: "took it to dealership and they said I NEEDED A new fuel tank, pressure sensor and filler neck assembly at $3300." (complaint #11317908)
Across the 23 owners who wrote in a dollar amount, the midpoint was $2,000 and the middle half ran $1,500 to $2,800. That's above our tank-only estimate, and the quotes explain why: filler necks, pressure sensors and other fuel parts ride along. The top of the range is a 2017 BMW 328D owner who reported an estimate of "$14,000+" for the tank, lines and both pumps (complaint #11470568).
Before you agree to a bundle, ask for each part priced separately. Then run your car through the calculator and compare.
Is it safe to drive with a leaking gas tank?
No. If you can smell fuel or see it dripping, park the car and get it towed. Among the 2,810 complaints, owners checked 66 fires, 42 crashes and 65 injuries on the NHTSA form, and 2 deaths.
Where it happened matters too. Of the 809 owners who gave a speed, 41% were at 55 mph or faster, and the midpoint was 45 mph. Owners also reported 103 losses of power and 58 stalls while driving. A car that quits at highway speed is a different kind of problem from one that just smells.
Here's how we'd sort it:
- Stop driving today: fuel smell, visible drips, fuel shooting back at the pump, or the engine stalling. A tow costs far less than the risks above. One 2016 Audi A3 owner told NHTSA they could "only add an extreme minimum amount (about $5.00 worth or less) of fuel to the fuel tank before it shoots out all over the place" (complaint #11479765).
- Get it checked this week: a check engine or warning light with no other symptom. Warning lights showed up in 24% of complaints.
- You have time to shop around: a diagnosis in hand, no leak, and a quote you want to compare.
Only 4% of the 2,810 complaints checked "vehicle towed," so most owners kept driving longer than the list above would suggest. We wouldn't.
Is it the tank or the fuel pump?
Sometimes it's both, and sometimes it's neither. The fuel pump is named in 13% (373) of the 2,810 complaints, so a shop that says "tank" may be looking at the wrong part, or at two.
Owners also report repeats: 15% said the dealer couldn't fix it or the repair had to be repeated. And the Accord owner above was first quoted $800 to clean a tank for what turned out to be a different problem. A 2017 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen owner described the parts split this way: "fuel tank, $943; fuel pump, $694" (complaint #11482153).
If the pump is the suspect, look at the fuel pump repair cost too. Sometimes it's a cheaper fix than a full tank.
What should you ask the shop before saying yes?
Ask for the quote in writing, part by part. Five questions cover most of what owners got burned on:
- What exactly failed, and can you show me? A leak, a bad valve or sensor, or a rusted tank are three different repairs.
- Is the fuel pump, filler neck or pressure sensor included, and priced separately?
- Have you checked my VIN for recalls and warranty extensions?
- Is the tank new, OEM or aftermarket, and what's the warranty?
- Can I see the old tank when the job is done?
A good shop is glad to answer. If they're not, that's your answer. Note that the top search results for this topic are mostly high-capacity tanks sold to add driving range on trucks. They're upgrades, not repair quotes, so don't use their prices to judge a repair bill.
What to do this week
Fuel tank replacement is a safety repair first and a money problem second. Here's the order we'd follow:
- Today: if there's a fuel smell or leak, stop driving and tow it.
- This week: check your VIN for recalls, then ask the shop for a part-by-part quote and whether the fuel pump is fine.
- Before you pay: run your car through the fuel tank replacement calculator, pick your tank size and shop type, and get a second quote if yours is well above the range.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a gas tank?
For a midsize car, $763–$1,493 at a dealer and $625–$1,245 at an independent shop, by our estimate. Compact cars start at $580–$1,078 and trucks or full-size SUVs run $945–$2,090 at a dealer. Owners who reported real amounts gave a median of $2,000.
How long does a fuel tank replacement take?
Our calculator uses 2.5–4.5 labor hours for a midsize car, 2–3.5 for a compact and 3–6 for a truck or full-size SUV. Parts availability can add days, as one Volkswagen owner found when the dealer had neither the tank nor the pump in stock.
Is a fuel tank replacement covered by a recall?
It can be. NHTSA lists 41 recalls on this part, including 2021–2024 Kia K5, 2020–2023 Hyundai Sonata and 2023–2027 Ford F-150. Check your VIN for free before paying. Check for maker warranty extensions too.
How many miles do fuel tanks last?
There's no fixed number. Owners who complained to NHTSA reported the problem at a median of 34,000 miles and 3 years old, with the middle half between 6,000 and 65,000 miles. That describes owners who had a problem, not every car.
