Check your car

Your VIN goes from your browser straight to NHTSA. We never receive or store it.

Oil leak repair cost typically runs $204–$363 in our calculator, at $120 an hour for parts and labor. A loose drain plug or filter seal can be as low as $68–$121. An oil pan gasket runs $385–$680. That's our estimate, not a quote, so use it to judge the number a shop gives you.

Price is only half of it. Owners told NHTSA about 2,004 oil leaks, and 277 of those complaints mention engine damage. A leak you can watch is different from one that's emptying the engine. Use the calculator for your car to see where your quote lands, then read on for how urgent yours is.

How much does an oil leak repair cost?

Plan on $204–$363 for a typical oil leak repair, and expect the leak source to move it more than anything else. The estimate assumes parts plus labor at $120 an hour.

Leak source Estimate
Drain plug / filter O-ring (minor drip) $68–$121
Default setting $204–$363
Front main / cam seal (front of engine) $362–$657
Valve cover gasket, V6/V8 (seepage on top) $363–$628
Oil pan gasket (puddle under car) $385–$680

The pattern is easy to remember. The closer the leak is to the surface, the cheaper it is. A drain plug is a few minutes. An oil pan or a front seal means more parts off the engine and more hours on the bill.

Our calculator has no rear main seal setting, so we won't quote a number for it. One published guide calls it the hard one, because it needs major disassembly. If a shop names the rear main seal, ask them to show you where the oil is coming from before you agree.

Not sure which one you have? A diagnosis costs money too, and the car diagnostic cost estimate shows what's normal. Ask the shop to put the diagnosis fee toward the repair if you go ahead.

Is it safe to drive with an oil leak?

It depends on how fast you're losing oil, and how you'd know. A few spots on the driveway is not the same as a puddle after one night.

  • Stop driving: oil pressure or oil warning light on, smoke or a burning smell from the engine, or the dipstick reads low right after you topped it up. Tow it.
  • Get it looked at this week: a fresh puddle, or you're adding oil between changes.
  • You have time to shop around: a few drips, a dipstick that holds steady, no smell, no light.

Fire is the reason not to wait on smoke. Owners reported 47 fires, 9 crashes and 9 injuries on the NHTSA form for oil leaks, and 1 death. These are owners' own reports, so they don't prove the leak caused each one. They do show what people ran into.

One owner told NHTSA: "to top it off I HAD A major oil leak at 19,000 MILES CAUSING ABOUT $6,000 WORTH OF DAMAGE" (2015 Toyota 4Runner, complaint #10954958). That's what waiting can cost.

Before you drive again: check the dipstick cold, on level ground. If it's low, add oil and watch how fast it drops.

Why do other sites say an oil leak costs $600–$1,000?

Because they give one blended number for many different repairs, and yours may be at the cheap end. Here's what the top results say.

Site Their range
Synchrony $600–$1,000
Heath's Auto and Ascot Auto Repair $600–$1,000
KBB (oil pan gasket only) $933–$1,037
Carsilks (seals and gaskets) $150–$600

Those are their opinions, and none says how it got the number. Ours is scoped: a leak source, a shop rate and a vehicle class, each shown next to the price. That's why we can say a drain plug is $68–$121 and an oil pan gasket is $385–$680, where a single range can't.

If a quote is well above our range for your leak source, ask what else is on the ticket. Some shops bundle a fluid change, a new filter or a diagnosis. Those are fair items, but you should see them listed. Our methodology page explains how we build the estimate.

Does a dealer or an SUV cost more for an oil leak repair?

Yes, but the shop moves the price more than the vehicle does. Both come from the default leak source.

Setting Estimate
Independent shop (~$100/hr) $182–$326
Default shop ($120/hr) $204–$363
Dealership (~$175/hr) $266–$466
Economy car (Civic, Corolla, Focus) $195–$345
SUV / truck (Tahoe, Ram 1500, 4Runner) $213–$381
Luxury / performance (BMW, Mercedes, Corvette) $213–$381

The parts don't change much. You're paying for the hourly rate. If a dealership is your only quote, get a second from an independent shop before you say yes.

Owners' complaints mention a dealer 1,129 times and an independent shop 218 times. That doesn't tell you dealers do worse work. It only tells you which shop type owners named.

How can you lower your oil leak repair cost?

Start by catching the leak while it's still near the top of our price table. A drain plug or filter O-ring is $68–$121. An oil pan gasket is $385–$680. Waiting turns a small fix into a big one, and the 277 engine damage complaints show where waiting can end up.

Then look at who does the work. Using the same default leak source, an independent shop runs $182–$326 and a dealership $266–$466.

Three habits keep the bill honest:

  • Check the dipstick on a schedule. A steady dipstick means you can take your time getting quotes. A dropping one means you can't.
  • Bundle sensibly. If the shop is already draining the oil, a fresh fill is a fair line item. The oil change estimate shows what that piece should cost, so you can spot it padded.
  • Get two quotes for anything above $363. That's the top of our typical range. Above it, the source is probably a pan, a front seal or a valve cover, and each of those has its own range in the table above.

What should you ask the shop before you approve the repair?

Ask five things, and write down the answers. A good shop won't mind.

  1. Where exactly is the oil coming from? Ask to see it, on the car or on a photo.
  2. Was the engine cleaned and rechecked? Old oil spreads. A leak at the top can look like one at the bottom.
  3. What's the labor time? Multiply it by the shop's hourly rate. Our estimate uses $120 an hour, so you can compare.
  4. What else is on the ticket? Fluids, filters and diagnosis should each be listed.
  5. Do you check for recalls and bulletins? Ten recalls and 497 service bulletins touch this part, so check your VIN before you pay for anything.

If the answer to the first question is vague, don't approve a big repair on a guess. That's the lesson of the $10,000 quote above: it was for finding the source, not fixing it.

What to do about an oil leak this week

Start with the dipstick and the driveway, then work through it:

  1. Today: check the oil level. If it's low or the light is on, don't drive it.
  2. This week: pay for a diagnosis so you know the source, and ask to see the leak.
  3. Before you agree: check your VIN for recalls, then get a second quote if the first is well above our range for your leak.

A leak that's cheap now can be expensive later, and 277 owners reported engine damage. But an urgent-sounding quote isn't proof the repair is needed. Ask the shop to show you where the oil is coming from.

A good shop is glad to. If they won't, that's your answer.

Get your estimate for your car. It's free, with no account, and we don't take referral fees from any shop. For what technicians earn, see the BLS page on automotive service technicians.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fix an oil leak?

Our estimate is $204–$363 for a typical repair, with a range of $68–$680 by leak source. Drain plug or filter seals are cheapest, oil pan and front seals cost most. A quote well above your source's range is worth questioning.

Is it OK to drive with a small oil leak?

Sometimes, if the dipstick holds steady and there's no smoke, smell or warning light. Check the oil often and get it looked at soon. Stop driving if the oil light comes on or you smell burning.

How long can you drive with an oil leak?

There's no safe number of miles, because it depends on how fast you're losing oil. A drip that costs a quart every 3,000 miles is very different from one that empties the engine in a day. Check the dipstick to know which you have.

Why is a rear main seal leak more expensive?

One published guide says it needs a lot of disassembly, which raises labor. Our calculator doesn't price it separately, so ask the shop for the labor hours and compare with a second quote.

Does a dealer charge more to fix an oil leak?

Usually, yes. In our estimate a dealership runs $266–$466 against $182–$326 at an independent shop for the same repair, because of the hourly rate.
