How the price estimate was built
What it shows: Our default range is $113 to $195; 2 of 4 published ranges overlap it.
What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($134)MiddleHigher-cost states ($170)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $170 and AR the lowest at $134, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 50,000 (93%), against 60% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 3 years old (62%), against 40% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
780 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
Which other parts do owners name in the same complaint?
Among the 780 owner complaints naming this part, wheel is named in 8% of them, more than any other part.
Other parts named in the same complaints. Wheel: 8%; Tire installation: 6%.
Owners name the wheel most often in the same complaint, which is not proof that one caused the other. Ask the shop whether it checked the wheel too, so you are not quoted twice for one visit.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 54%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 780 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2017 is the largest at 176 (23%), followed by 2015 at 86 (11%); the smallest shown is 2022 at 28 (4%).

If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns for parts matched to a rim repair since model year 2015, covering about 37,182 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

My rear passenger rim was damaged and I incurred a $410 expense for the tire replacement as it was not warrantied by either Volvo or Pirelli.
The shop quoted me at $2,154 as there were 5 or 6 different parts they needed to repair including the ball joint, axle, brakes, brake sensors, rim, etc.

Rim repair cost is $113–$195 per wheel for curb rash, $206–$358 for a bend and $281–$488 for a crack, in our estimate for one standard alloy wheel. That's an estimate, not a quote. Put your own wheel into the calculator on this page before you talk to a shop.
Start with the safety question, because it comes before the price. A scuffed finish is a cosmetic problem. A crack, a bend or a wheel that vibrates at highway speed is not, and a low repair quote doesn't make it safe.
How much does rim repair cost per wheel?
Our default estimate is $113–$195 for one wheel: cosmetic curb rash on a standard alloy. Change the damage, the material or the number of wheels and the range moves.
| What you change | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Curb rash, standard alloy, 1 rim | $113–$195 |
| Structural bend, standard alloy, 1 rim | $206–$358 |
| Crack or weld repair, standard alloy, 1 rim | $281–$488 |
| Curb rash, steel, 1 rim | $79–$137 |
| Curb rash, chrome or specialty, 1 rim | $163–$283 |
| Curb rash, standard alloy, 2 rims | $226–$390 |
| Curb rash, standard alloy, 3 rims | $339–$585 |
| Curb rash, standard alloy, 4 rims | $452–$780 |
The low-to-high gap is wide because damage and wheel design decide the labor. Nothing here is a firm price until a shop has looked at your wheel out of the car.
Before you say yes: ask for the price per wheel, in writing, with what's included. If the quote is a single number for "the wheels," ask for it to be split.
Is it safe to drive on a bent or cracked rim?
Sort your situation into one of three buckets. Cracks, missing material and damage near a spoke or the mounting area: stop driving the car and have the wheel inspected. A bend, or a vibration you didn't have last month: get it checked this week, and skip the highway until then. Only scuffs and curb rash with no air loss and no vibration: you have time to shop around.
Owners' own reports show why the first bucket matters. Of the 711 complaints that gave a speed, 47% were at 55 mph or faster, and the midpoint was 50 mph. On the NHTSA form, owners checked 112 crashes, 11 fires and 71 injuries across the 1,265 complaints. None reported a death.
One thing to keep in mind: these are owners' own reports, not lab results. A complaint that names a rim doesn't prove the rim caused a crash. It does show that people who hit trouble were often moving fast.
Damage can hide under brake dust or corrosion. A shop that offers to strip the wheel and look for cracks before quoting is doing the right thing. A quote given from a photo can't tell a scuff from a structural problem.
Before you drive again: ask the shop whether the wheel was checked for cracks after straightening, and whether the wheel maker allows that repair.
What changes rim repair cost the most?
Damage type is the biggest lever. Going from curb rash ($113–$195) to a crack ($281–$488) multiplies the low end by about two and a half. Material is second: a steel rim runs $79–$137 for the same cosmetic repair, and chrome or specialty finishes $163–$283.
The number of wheels scales evenly. Four wheels with curb rash come to $452–$780, exactly four times one. Ask whether the shop discounts a set. Our estimate doesn't assume it.
Finish matters too, though our estimate doesn't break it out beyond chrome and specialty. Ask what finish work the quote includes and how closely it will match your other wheels.
Your move: photograph the damage from two angles and note the wheel finish before you call. It gets you a better first answer.
Should you repair or replace the rim?
Repair only makes sense while it's cheaper than a matching wheel and the wheel is structurally sound. If a shop says it can't repair the wheel, believe it, and price a replacement with our wheel replacement cost estimate.
Owners describe how fast the bill grows. One 2017 Chevrolet Corvette owner told NHTSA, "by the way, these rims cost over $800 APIECE" (complaint #11277445).
Those are three owners, not a typical bill. They do show that a rim rarely gets damaged alone. Hitting something hard enough to bend a wheel can also hurt the tire, the suspension and the brakes.
Compare that to the $281–$488 for a crack repair. When the two are that close, the repair usually loses.
Before you decide: get one written repair quote and one written installed replacement quote for your exact wheel, and compare the totals.
Why do rim repair cost numbers online disagree?
Published prices range from $62 to $400 because each number covers a different job. We looked at four.
| Source | Published range | What it appears to cover |
|---|---|---|
| Yelp | $62–$125 | National average about $100, labor and materials |
| OEM Rim Shop | $75–$400 | Bent rim repair, per wheel |
| Performance Plus Tire | $200–$500 | Factory replacement, not repair |
| WheelFX (Canada) | $30–$60 | DIY repair kits |
| This site's estimate | $113–$195 | Curb rash, standard alloy, 1 rim |
A few reasons could explain that, including scope and region, and we can't tell which applies to your area. A local shop, Houston Wheel Repair, states $75 to $200 for most wheels, which overlaps ours.
The takeaway: a number is only useful with its scope. "Rim repair" can mean scuff repair, straightening, welding or a new wheel. Ask which one the quote is for.
Read how the numbers are built on our methodology page.
What does a mixed set of damaged wheels add up to?
Real damage is rarely one clean case. A pothole hit can leave one wheel cracked and the other three scuffed. Because our estimate scales evenly per wheel, you can add the rows in the table above to budget for a mixed set. This is our arithmetic, not a shop quote.
Look at that last line. Four chrome wheels can cost more than a bent rim and a crack together. If your car has specialty finishes, the finish, not the damage, may drive the bill.
Ask yourself which wheel is worst. One cracked wheel changes the whole plan, because a crack is the one case where replacement can be the safer call, even when the numbers are close. Price the cracked wheel on its own, then price the cosmetic ones as a batch.
Before you approve a set: ask the shop to list each wheel and its damage on the quote, so you can see which line is pushing the total up.
How old are the cars in the rim complaints?
Young, mostly. Across all models, 62% of owners said the car was under 3 years old. Of the owners who gave a mileage, 88% were under 50,000 miles, and the middle half reported 7,000 to 30,000 miles.
That matters for you in two ways. First, a car that young may still be inside a factory warranty window, so it's worth asking about coverage before you assume the repair is yours to pay for. Warranties rarely cover road-hazard damage, as the Volvo owner above learned, but a wheel that fails with no impact is a different story.
Second, don't read a young car as proof that the wheel was defective. The complaint files don't say what hit the wheel or what size it was. These are owners' reports, so treat the age pattern as a pointer, not a diagnosis.
Your move: if your wheel cracked with no clear impact and the car is under 3 years old, say so in writing when you contact the dealer and the manufacturer. Then check your VIN for open recalls.
What should you ask the shop before you pay?
Your bill may include work the rim quote doesn't mention. Ask about each item.
- Tire mounting and balancing. A repaired wheel has to be balanced. Check our tire balancing cost estimate.
- Sensor relearn. Cars with tire pressure sensors may need a relearn after the tire comes off. See tire pressure monitoring system relearn cost.
- Alignment. If the impact was hard, a wheel alignment check is worth asking about.
- The old part. Ask to see the crack or the bend. A good shop is glad to show you.
What should you do about your rim this week?
If the wheel is cracked, bent or vibrating, don't drive it until someone inspects it. For curb rash only, you have time to get two quotes.
This week:
- Price your damage in the rim repair cost calculator.
- Check your VIN for recalls on NHTSA's site.
- Ask the shop for a written, per-wheel quote and what it includes.
This month: get a second quote if the first is well above our range for your damage type, and ask to see the damaged wheel.
Every number here comes from our calculator or NHTSA's public records. No shop pays us, and no price on this page changes because of an ad.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to repair a bent rim?
A bent standard alloy rim costs $206–$358 per wheel in our estimate. That's for a structural bend on one rim. A shop may decline to straighten a wheel if it finds a crack, in which case you're pricing a replacement.
Is it safe to drive on a bent rim?
Not until it's inspected. A bend can crack the wheel or break the tire seal, and a smooth-looking outer lip doesn't prove the wheel is sound. If you have a vibration at speed, get it checked this week and avoid highway driving until then.
Can a cracked rim be repaired?
Sometimes. Our estimate for a crack or weld repair is $281–$488 per wheel. But some wheel makers don't allow welding, and a repair that's allowed still needs inspection. Ask the shop what standard it follows.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a rim?
For a crack, the two get close, and replacement may be safer.
Does insurance or warranty cover rim repair?
Usually not for pothole or curb damage, and one Volvo owner told NHTSA it wasn't. A recall or bulletin is different, so check your VIN first.
