If this part was recalled, is the repair free?

Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns for parts matched to a transfer case repair since model year 2015, covering about 393,425 vehicles.

Rule or countWhat it says
Age limitsThe free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice.
Failure to fixA repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation.
Free remedyA maker must fix a recall defect without charge.

Check your car

Your VIN goes from your browser straight to NHTSA. We never receive or store it.

Our calculator's default estimate is $355–$940. That is a seal or gasket repair on a pickup truck at the dealer shop type, which the calculator prices at $120 an hour. The repair type moves the bill more than the shop or the vehicle does, so the first thing to pin down is which repair your transfer case needs.

What does the transfer case repair price cover?

The estimate covers the part and the labor to fit it for one named repair. The default is a seal or gasket repair on a pickup truck. Parts are priced higher for a pickup truck than for a car or SUV because the calculator scales parts by vehicle weight class.

It leaves out the diagnosis fee some shops charge, taxes, shop fees, and any second part found once the case is opened. It is a range for a typical vehicle, not a quote for yours. If a shop quotes a replacement unit, ask for the unit price and the labor hours as separate lines.

How much does each repair cost?

Here are the calculator's ranges for the four repair types it offers, for a pickup truck at the dealer shop type.

Repair Estimate
Fluid service $106–$258
Seal or gasket (default) $355–$940
Shift motor or actuator $410–$1,050
Full rebuild or replacement $1,055–$3,835

Shop type and vehicle class move the default seal or gasket job by less. An independent shop, which the calculator prices at $100 an hour, is $315–$860, and a car or SUV is $340–$880.

How do I tell what the transfer case needs?

Start with what you can observe: a fluid leak under the middle of the vehicle, a four-wheel-drive message on the dash, or grinding when you shift into four-wheel drive. Each points to a different row in the table.

Ask the shop which repair it is quoting and what test showed it. A leak the shop has seen and a fault code it has read are reasonable answers. "It might be the transfer case" is not enough to approve the most expensive row.

Also ask whether the shop checked the parts around it. The differential and driveshaft sit next to the transfer case, and the owner reports above show them named alongside it, so ask what the shop ruled out.

How do I get a fair quote?

Ask for the repair named exactly as in the table, with parts and labor as separate lines. Ask whether the part is new, remanufactured or used, and whether a warranty comes with the labor.

Then get a second quote for the same named repair. If one shop quotes a rebuild and another a seal for the same symptom, ask the first to show you what is wrong before you pay for the larger job. Enter your vehicle and shop type in the calculator, and take that range with you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with a bad transfer case?

A transfer case that grinds, will not stay in gear or slips into neutral should not be driven: have it checked first. A slow seal leak can wait for an appointment. Tell the shop which one you have when you call.

Is a fluid service enough to fix a transfer case problem?

Only if the fluid was the cause. If a seal, motor or gear has failed, a fluid service at $106–$258 will not stop the symptom.

Why does a rebuild cost more than a seal?

The shop removes the unit and works on the parts inside it, so there is more labor. The calculator puts a full rebuild or replacement at $1,055–$3,835.
