If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 1 recall campaigns for parts matched to a wheel replacement since model year 2015, covering about 952 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

Does my car have to have a tire pressure sensor, and when does it warn?
Federal standard FMVSS 138 requires a car's tire pressure warning light to come on within 20 minutes once a tire is 25 percent or more below the recommended pressure, phased in at 20% of cars (2005 to 2006), 70% (2006 to 2007) and every car built from September 1, 2007, so a car from that date forward has a sensor to service.
| Requirement | What the standard says |
|---|---|
| Applies to | cars, multipurpose vehicles, trucks and buses of 10,000 pounds or less (not dual-rear-wheel vehicles) |
| vehicles built October 5, 2005 to August 31, 2006 | at least 20% of a maker's cars had to comply |
| vehicles built on or after September 1, 2007 | every car must comply |
| vehicles built September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007 | at least 70% of a maker's cars had to comply |
| Warning light | The warning light must come on within 20 minutes once one or more tires is at or below 25 percent under the recommended cold pressure. |

What do owners say?
2 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
The first wheel cracked at approximately 25,000 miles.
After persistent arguing and a 5-hour wait at the service center, I was finally given a report showing a $2,338.99 wheel replacement recommendation, not covered by warranty.
Check your car
At the calculator's default settings, replacing one wheel costs $332 to $615 installed. Material moves the price most, from $201 to $332 for the lowest option to $870 to $1,733 for the highest.
Chevrolet Corvette (67 complaints, most from 2017, 2018, 2019 models, median 12,918 miles) led the 159 owner complaints to NHTSA. The failed wheels were usually on young cars, at 2 years old (median age at failure, 156 complaints) and 17,000 miles (median of 67 complaints with a mileage). On a car that new, ask the dealer about warranty coverage before you pay.
Half of wheel complaints also name the rim, so a quote for a wheel is a quote for the whole rim
Owners named the rim in 51% of wheel complaints, far more often than any other part. That tells you what these reports describe: the metal wheel itself cracked or bent, not a tire or a sensor. A cracked or bent wheel is priced as a full new wheel. On this calculator, that means the material setting changes the bill more than anything else.
A 2016 Corvette owner reported one wheel after another: "Right rear wheel cracked and lost air pressure after 4,000 miles, left rear wheel cracked and lost air pressure after 6,800 miles." (NHTSA complaint #11067302) If one wheel has already cracked, price the matching wheel on the same axle as well.
If the damage reaches the rim, which owners named in 51% (81) of the 159 wheel complaints, price a rim repair before you agree to a full new wheel.
Dealers appear in 66 wheel complaints and independent shops in only 1
Wheel complaints mention a dealer 66 times and an independent shop once. Most of these owners were driving newer cars and took them back to the dealer.
A dealer visit does not always mean the warranty pays.
Ford Edge wheel complaints came at a median of 2,500 miles, mostly on 2016 models
Owners filed 6 wheel complaints on the Ford Edge, and 2016 was the peak model year. The median mileage was 2,500, which is almost new. At that odometer reading, a cracked or bent wheel on an Edge is worth taking to a dealer first, before you pay for it yourself.
A pothole bent a Honda Accord wheel at 22,442 miles and highway speed
Not every report is a wheel cracking on its own. A 2017 Honda Accord owner reported that "the front right wheel bent after hitting a pothole while driving between 50-55mph on the highway." (NHTSA complaint #11129496) Impact damage like this is priced the same way as a crack.

What is our own estimate
The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Checked against RepairPal's range ($942–$970) on 2026-10-06: our default's midpoint is 0% above the middle of that range. Methodology
