What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($417)MiddleHigher-cost states ($531)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $531 and AR the lowest at $417, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 50,000 (78%), against 60% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 3 years old (62%), against 40% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
12,138 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
What did owners say they paid?
Half of the 22 owners who wrote a dollar amount gave $950 or less; one in ten wrote more than $2,000.
These are bills owners wrote down, often covering more than this one repair. They show how far a job can run; get written quotes for your own car.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 57%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 12,138 owner complaints naming this part, injury is the outcome owners report most often.
What it shows: Injury reported is the largest at 88, followed by Crash reported at 64; the smallest shown is Death reported at 2.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 12,138 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2019 is the largest at 1,804 (15%), followed by 2015 at 1,114 (9%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 436 (4%).
Do reports of this repair follow the weather where owners live, county by county?
A moderate pattern, not a firm finding: across 279 U.S. counties with 10 or more NHTSA owner complaints about windshield replacement, reports run 23% above the national share in the third with the coldest winters against 5% below in the third with the mildest winters. This is an association across counties, not a cause.
Reports of windshield replacement by county, grouped by winter cold (heating degree days). Third of counties with the mildest winters: 5% below; Middle third: 15% above; Third with the coldest winters: 23% above.
- Split the 279 counties into thirds by winter cold (heating degree days): the third with the mildest winters reports windshield replacement 5% below what the national share predicts, the middle third 15% above, and the third with the coldest winters 23% above.
- Take out any single county and the pattern still holds; the one it leans on most is Missoula County, MT.
- Weak spot: compare only counties with similar summer heat (cooling degree days) and the pattern keeps about 8% of its strength, so part of it may come from that instead.
- Still open: complaint city names are matched to counties by place name, so a county with postal-neighbourhood names is undercounted, and county elevation is the height of one point, not the county average.
Weather and roads act on a car where it is driven, not on a state average, so the county map tests the same mechanism more closely.
How much of a repair bill is labor and how much is parts?
In the 2017 Economic Census, auto glass replacement shops took 34.2% of their repair revenue from labor charges and 65.8% from parts installed, well below the 51.0% labor share of all auto repair shops (U.S. Census Bureau, national, 6,026 shops).
Where auto glass replacement shops get their repair revenue, 2017: labor charges versus parts installed. Labor charges: 34.2%; Parts installed: 65.8%.

What it shows: Cleveland County, OK is the largest at 4.5, followed by Tarrant County, TX at 4.2; the smallest shown is Canadian County, OK at 2.5.
If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 40 recall campaigns for parts matched to a windshield replacement since model year 2015, covering about 5,152,103 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
4 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
I don't have $1200 so I'm forced to drive my vehicle without the ability to defrost the drivers side of the windshield.
The windshield was not repairable and we spent about $950 out of pocket to repair the windshield as it had to be ordered through the dealership.
In february 2019 I had to replace the windshield in my 2016 subaru outback because of a crack that started from the passenger side edge from a very tiny chip, and paid about $950 (oem equipment and due to the eyesight system calibration required).
Guess I have to wait for them to crack and spread and get a whole new $1,000 windshield.
Check your car
Windshield replacement cost lands at $320–$640 on our calculator's default settings, which price aftermarket glass, installed. Choose OEM glass and it's $420–$840. Add camera calibration and the total becomes $470–$940 for a static calibration or $620–$1,240 for a dynamic one.
That's our estimate, not a quote. A number well outside those ranges is a reason to ask what's on the ticket. The glass usually isn't the surprise. The sensors behind it are.
Nobody budgets four figures for a piece of glass. Owners of 2015–2025 models have filed 14,528 NHTSA complaints that name the windshield, and we read what they wrote, checked recalls and warranty extensions, and ran the numbers so you can tell a fair quote from a padded one. You can use the calculator for your own car at any point, or read on for what moves the price.
How much does windshield replacement cost in 2026?
Windshield replacement cost is $320–$640 with aftermarket glass on our default settings, and every setting you change moves it. Here is what the calculator returns for each option.
| Setting | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Default (aftermarket glass + install) | $320–$640 |
| OEM (original manufacturer) glass | $420–$840 |
| Independent shop (~$100/hr) | $300–$600 |
| Dealership (~$175/hr) | $375–$750 |
| Economy (Civic, Corolla, Focus) | $270–$540 |
| SUV / Truck (Tahoe, Ram 1500, 4Runner) | $370–$740 |
| Luxury / Performance (BMW, Mercedes, Corvette) | $520–$1,440 |
| Static calibration needed (~$150–$300 add-on) | $470–$940 |
| Dynamic calibration required (~$300–$600 add-on) | $620–$1,240 |
For comparison, AAA's windshield cost guide puts a full replacement at $250 to $1,500 or more. That's a wide range because it lumps together cars with and without cameras. Other glass-industry guides we read put most standard replacements at $250–$800, which matches our economy and default lines.
Vehicle type moves windshield replacement cost more than most people expect. The luxury line tops out at $1,440, more than double the default top end.
Before you agree to anything: ask for the quote itemized into glass, labor and calibration. If a shop won't split it out, get another quote.
Is it safe to drive with a cracked windshield?
It depends on where the crack is and whether it's spreading, so sort yours into one of three tiers. A crack in your line of sight, one that reaches the edge of the glass, or one that's visibly growing means stop driving it at speed and get it looked at today. A chip or short crack outside your view means get it checked this week. A tiny chip you've watched for days means you have time to shop around.
Speed is the reason not to wait. Of the 6,346 complaints that gave a speed, 53% happened at 55 mph or faster, and the midpoint was 55 mph. A crack that gives way at highway speed is not where you want to find out.
Glass can also fail with no warning. One 2016 Acura MDX owner told NHTSA the cracking appeared "within one week on 3/25/2016 within only 190 miles on the odometer on this brand new $60K vehicle... despite not seeing or hearing anything hit the windshield" (complaint #10854355).
That's the case for fixing chips early. AAA lists a small chip repair at $60–$100 and a crack repair at $100–$150, against a windshield replacement cost of $320 or more. Book the repair the week you see the chip.
Why is windshield replacement cost higher on newer cars?
Newer cars carry cameras and sensors behind the glass, and the shop has to recalibrate them after the new windshield goes in. On our calculator that turns $320–$640 into $470–$940 with a static calibration (a shop-floor procedure with targets, about $150–$300 extra) or $620–$1,240 with a dynamic one (a road-based procedure, about $300–$600 extra).
The cars in NHTSA's complaints skew young. Of the 14,123 complaints that gave a vehicle age, 59% were under 3 years old, and the midpoint was 2 years. Those are the cars most likely to have the equipment.
Owners describe the effect in dollars. A 2017 Toyota Highlander owner wrote that the windshield "was cracked severely in the first 1000 miles from minor stones hitting the base of the windshield, requiring replacement- OEM with camera, heat, radar sensors for $1800" (complaint #11143389).
That's typical of how this shows up, so ask for the calibration on its own line.
Two questions to put to the shop: does the quote include calibration, and will you get the calibration report afterward? If your car has lane-keeping or automatic braking, a skipped calibration is not a saving. See our windshield calibration cost estimate for what it should run on your car.
Should you pay for OEM glass or aftermarket?
OEM glass adds to windshield replacement cost: $420–$840 on our calculator against $320–$640 for aftermarket, so figure roughly $100–$200 extra. The gap can feel bigger on a luxury car, and it matters more when the glass has a camera mount, a heated element or a head-up display.
AAA recommends OEM or OEM-equivalent glass for vehicles with driver-assistance systems. Owners echo that in dollars. A 2018 Honda CR-V owner wrote that the windshield cracked twice after a chip, "requiring windshield replacement at $1,200 (OEM) each time" (complaint #11277548).
You don't need OEM everywhere. For an older car with no camera and no head-up display, aftermarket glass at the lower price is a reasonable choice. For a newer one, the calibration matters at least as much as the badge on the glass.
Before you pay, ask which glass is going in and where the invoice says so.
Is a dealer or an independent shop cheaper for windshield replacement?
An independent shop has the lower windshield replacement cost on our calculator: $300–$600 at about $100 an hour, against $375–$750 at a dealership charging about $175 an hour. The glass in those two estimates is the same. You're paying the hourly rate.
The dealer's advantage is convenience and, sometimes, OEM parts on the shelf. That's one thread's opinion, not data.
Ask any shop that quotes you: "Who installs the glass?" If a dealer's quote is your only one, get a second before you say yes.
Does insurance cover windshield replacement?
Often yes, under comprehensive coverage, but the deductible decides whether the windshield replacement cost is worth filing over. AAA says comprehensive typically covers replacement when you aren't at fault, and lists Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina as states with zero-deductible options.
Here is the arithmetic in one owner's words. A 2019 Subaru Crosstrek owner wrote: "Driving through Kansas my windshield cracked, I thought due to the wind, and I had to file an insurance claim for it to be replaced, paying a $250 deductible on a $1022 bill" (complaint #11310900). If your deductible is $500 and your estimate is $320–$640, paying cash may cost the same as filing.
Read your policy for a separate glass deductible, since some are far lower than the base one. That's one person's report, so confirm yours with your insurer. If you want to see what your coverage costs overall, see our car insurance cost calculator.
One more question if the crack showed up with no hit: ask the maker whether it's an impact crack or a stress crack. It was one owner's account and we can't confirm it, but it costs nothing to ask.
What to do next
Start with the windshield replacement cost for your car, then work down this list.
- Today: If the crack is in your line of sight, reaches the edge or is spreading, don't keep driving it at speed. Call a shop.
- This week: Get two itemized quotes (glass, labor, calibration), and ask each shop who installs the glass and whether it's OEM.
- Before you pay: Compare your deductible to the estimate, check your VIN for recalls, and ask your maker about any warranty extension for the windshield.
Use the calculator for your car. It's free, with no account or email. We show where every number comes from on our methodology page, and we take no referral fees from any shop, so the estimate isn't shaped by who pays us.
A shop that itemizes the quote and shows you the old glass is a shop worth keeping. If they won't, that's your answer.
Frequently asked questions
How much does windshield replacement cost without insurance?
Plan on $320–$640 for aftermarket glass and $420–$840 for OEM glass on our default settings. Luxury and performance cars run $520–$1,440. Add $150–$300 for a static calibration or $300–$600 for a dynamic one if your car has cameras behind the glass.
Is a windshield quote over $2,000 normal?
It can be, but ask why. Our highest single-setting estimate is $1,440, for a luxury or performance car with aftermarket glass. Stacking OEM glass and calibration on top can push a bill past that, so ask for glass, labor and calibration on separate lines before you say yes.
Should I file an insurance claim or pay cash?
Compare your glass deductible to the estimate. If the deductible is close to or above $320–$640, paying cash usually costs about the same as filing. If you have a zero or low glass deductible, file. Confirm the number with your insurer first.
Can a chip be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, if it's caught early. AAA lists a small chip repair at $60–$100 and a crack repair at $100–$150. A chip in your direct line of sight or one already spreading toward the edge usually means replacement, so have a shop look at it this week.
Does calibration always cost extra?
Not always, but plan on it if your car has lane-keeping, automatic braking or a camera behind the mirror. Our calculator adds $150–$300 for static calibration and $300–$600 for dynamic. Ask whether the quote includes it, because it's often listed as its own line.

What is our own estimate
The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Not independently checked: no established price guide publishes a general range for this exact job (looked 2026-10-06), so the default has no outside comparison. Methodology
