How the price estimate was built
What it shows: Our default range is $77 to $147; 1 of 2 published ranges overlap it.
What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($97)MiddleHigher-cost states ($124)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $124 and AR the lowest at $97, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 3 years old (52%), against 40% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
2,698 owner complaints name this part.
What owners describe. Recall mentioned: 18%; Dealer could not fix or repeat repair: 14%; Warning light: 5%.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 48%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 2,698 owner complaints naming this part, crash is the outcome owners report most often.
Outcomes owners reported in complaints about this part. Crash reported: 15; Fire reported: 12; Injury reported: 9.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 2,698 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2015 is the largest at 554 (21%), followed by 2016 at 376 (14%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 79 (3%).
When in the year do owners report it?
NHTSA owner complaints about this part run furthest above the usual seasonal share in February: about 44% more of them name an incident that month than complaints about any part would predict. A complaint is a report, not a measured failure.
What it shows: January is the largest at 12% (all: 9%), followed by February at 11% (all: 8%); the smallest shown is November at 5% (all: 7%).
Do reports of this repair follow the weather where owners live, county by county?
Across 48 U.S. counties with 10 or more NHTSA owner complaints about windshield wiper blade replacement, reports run 68% above the national share in the third with the coldest winters against 23% below in the third with the mildest winters. This is an association across counties, not a cause.
Reports of windshield wiper blade replacement by county, grouped by winter cold (heating degree days). Third of counties with the mildest winters: 23% below; Middle third: 43% above; Third with the coldest winters: 68% above.
- Split the 48 counties into thirds by winter cold (heating degree days): the third with the mildest winters reports windshield wiper blade replacement 23% below what the national share predicts, the middle third 43% above, and the third with the coldest winters 68% above.
- Take out any single county and the pattern still holds; the one it leans on most is McHenry County, IL.
- Weak spot: compare only counties with similar summer heat (cooling degree days) and the pattern keeps about 54% of its strength, so part of it may come from that instead.
- Still open: complaint city names are matched to counties by place name, so a county with postal-neighbourhood names is undercounted, and county elevation is the height of one point, not the county average.
Weather and roads act on a car where it is driven, not on a state average, so the county map tests the same mechanism more closely.
Do windshield wiper blade replacement problems track share of state roads salted in winter across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about windshield wiper blade replacement run higher where share of state roads salted in winter is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that share of state roads salted in winter causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more share of state roads salted in winter (usgs salt-use tier); higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with share of state roads salted in winter (usgs salt-use tier).
What it shows: States with more share of state roads salted in winter (usgs salt-use tier) tend to sit higher on the chart across 42 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most share of state roads salted in winter (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana): reports of this repair run 33% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 10 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina): 19% below, and 4 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Washington (24% above expected) and Mississippi (43% above expected) are among the lowest but above expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least share of state roads salted in winter runs 16% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 22% above, and the third with the most 30% above. Most of the share of state roads salted in winter effect sits between the lowest and the middle third.
- For share of state roads salted in winter, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 10,000 or more. Take out any single state and the share of state roads salted in winter pattern still holds.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar all-sky sunshine at the surface, kWh per square meter per day and the pattern keeps about 22% of its strength, so part of it may come from all-sky sunshine at the surface, kWh per square meter per day instead of share of state roads salted in winter.
Road salt and slush corrode exposed metal and seize moving parts, and freezing weather stiffens rubber, so repairs to exposed parts can follow harsh winters.
Do windshield wiper blade replacement problems track average relative humidity across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about windshield wiper blade replacement run higher where average relative humidity is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that average relative humidity causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more average relative humidity (percent); higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with average relative humidity (percent).
What it shows: States with more average relative humidity (percent) tend to sit higher on the chart across 42 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most average relative humidity (Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Iowa, Delaware, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Alabama, Georgia): reports of this repair run 21% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 7 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, California, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska): 31% below, and 2 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Florida, Louisiana and Georgia are among the highest in average relative humidity but report below expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least average relative humidity runs 14% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 17% above, and the third with the most 25% above. Most of the average relative humidity effect sits between the lowest and the middle third.
- For average relative humidity, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 17. Take out any single state and the average relative humidity pattern still holds.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar elevation range from lowest to highest point and the pattern keeps about 41% of its strength, so part of it may come from elevation range from lowest to highest point instead of average relative humidity.
Humid air keeps metal and electrical connections damp, which speeds corrosion and electrical faults.
Which counties get the weather that wears this part?
FEMA's National Risk Index puts Worcester County, MA, Niagara County, NY and Middlesex County, MA highest for ice storms, about 2.99 events a year, against 0.70 in the median county. Ice storms are when wiper blades and winter tires do their work.
What it shows: Worcester County, MA is the largest at 2.99, followed by Niagara County, NY at 2.96; the smallest shown is Boone County, AR at 2.21.
If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 31 recall campaigns for parts matched to a windshield wiper blade replacement since model year 2015, covering about 5,652,435 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
4 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
Wiper blades transmission plastic parts keep popping or breaking this is the THIRD time this has happened at a cost of $350.
Yesterday marked the 2nd time that the front windshield wipers on my 2021 Chevy Suburban (58k miles) randomly stopped working while driving down the highway in a rainstorm.
While 400 miles from home on vacation, driving in rain, the windshield wipers quit working.
At 36,000 miles, have noticed a cracked windshield that runs the width of the windshield just above where the wiperblades sit.
Check your car
Windshield wiper blade replacement costs $77–$147 for a pair of conventional blades installed at a chain shop, by our estimate. Blade type, shop type and blade count move that number far more than your car does.
What does windshield wiper blade replacement cost by blade type and shop?
Three choices set the price: the blade type, how many blades you replace, and who installs them. Each row below changes one setting from the default.
| Choice | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Default: 2 conventional blades, chain shop | $77–$147 |
| 2 beam (bracketless) blades | $107–$206 |
| 2 hybrid or premium blades | $137–$236 |
| Front pair plus a rear blade (3 blades) | $93–$182 |
| Independent shop, parts store install | $32–$61 |
| Dealership | $105–$234 |
Blades alone run $8–$15 each for conventional, $15–$28 for beam and $22–$35 for hybrid. The rest of the bill is the install fee.
What does the price cover, and what does it leave out?
The estimate covers new blades and the labor to fit them. It doesn't cover taxes, shop fees, or a rear blade unless you pick the three-blade option. It also doesn't cover the wiper arms, the motor or the linkage.
That last gap matters. A price far above both usually means the quote includes more than blades.
Should you replace the blades yourself?
You can, and it's the cheapest route. The independent-shop setting in the calculator uses a parts store install, and that's why it starts at $32. Most parts stores will fit the blades after you buy them.
Pay for installation if your car uses an unusual arm connector or a hidden rear blade. Otherwise, you're paying a labor fee for a job that takes a few minutes.
How do you know it's the blades, and how urgent is it?
Blades are the likely cause if the wipers streak, skip, chatter or leave unwiped patches. That's rubber wear, and it's a cheap fix. Don't wait long, though. Worn rubber can leave scratches on the glass, and a scratched windshield costs far more than blades.
If the wipers stop moving at all, new blades won't help. That points to the motor or linkage, and the recalls and service bulletins cards above show which models have had that fault. Check your VIN for recalls before you pay for any repair.
How do you get a fair quote?
Ask for three things, and ask in this order.
- The price per blade and the brand or type, such as conventional, beam or hybrid.
- The install fee, shown as its own line.
- Whether the quote counts a rear blade.
If the shop quotes beam or hybrid blades, compare against the matching row in the table above, not the default. A premium blade at a conventional price is a good deal. A conventional blade at a premium price isn't.
Frequently asked questions
Do I replace both blades at once?
Yes. A new blade next to a worn one clears the glass unevenly, and mixed blade types behave differently. RepairPal also advises matching the brand across both.
Are beam blades worth the extra cost?
They cost $15–$28 each against $8–$15 for conventional blades. They suit places with snow and ice, because there's no bracket to pack with slush. In a mild climate, conventional blades do the job.
