How the price estimate was built
What it shows: Our default range is $130 to $330; 0 of 2 published ranges overlap it.
What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($200)MiddleHigher-cost states ($255)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $255 and AR the lowest at $200, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is 3-5 years (38%). The biggest difference from all complaints is under 3 years old: 29% against 40%.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
928 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
Which other parts do owners name in the same complaint?
Among the 928 owner complaints naming this part, driveshaft is named in 8% of them, more than any other part.
Other parts named in the same complaints. Driveshaft: 8%; Transfer case: 7%; CV axle: 3%.
Owners name the driveshaft most often in the same complaint, which is not proof that one caused the other. Ask the shop whether it checked the driveshaft too, so you are not quoted twice for one visit.
What did owners say they paid?
Half of the 21 owners who wrote a dollar amount gave $4,000 or less; one in ten wrote more than $11,000.
These are bills owners wrote down, often covering more than this one repair. They show how far a job can run; get written quotes for your own car.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 32%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 928 owner complaints naming this part, being towed is the outcome owners report most often.
What it shows: Towed is the largest at 37, followed by Crash reported at 8; the smallest shown is Injury reported at 4.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 928 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2019 is the largest at 154 (17%), followed by 2015 at 93 (10%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 8 (1%).
Are cars still worth repairing at this age?
The average light vehicle on U.S. roads is 12.8 years old in 2025, up from 8.4 years in 1995, and the average passenger car is 14.5 years old.
What it shows: 2025 is the largest at 12.8 years, followed by 1995 at 8.4 years; the smallest shown is 1995 at 8.4 years.
Have recalls for this part told owners to stop driving?
Recalls for this part that told owners to stop driving or park outside. Do not drive the vehicle: 2 recall (868).
Do differential repair problems track annual snowfall across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about differential repair run higher where annual snowfall is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that annual snowfall causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more annual snowfall (inches); higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with annual snowfall (inches).
What it shows: States with more annual snowfall (inches) tend to sit higher on the chart across 26 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 8 states with the most annual snowfall (New York, Michigan, Colorado, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Connecticut, Pennsylvania): reports of this repair run 32% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 7 of 8 are above expected. The 8 with the least (California, Florida, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina): 18% below, and 1 of 8 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Pennsylvania is among the highest in annual snowfall but reports below expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least annual snowfall runs 18% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 19% above, and the third with the most 32% above. It steps up steadily.
- For annual snowfall, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 10,000 or more. Take out any single state and the annual snowfall pattern still holds.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar very hot days and the pattern keeps about 33% of its strength, so part of it may come from very hot days instead of annual snowfall.
- For annual snowfall, of the 1 exception states, 0 read the same way for the other parts of the system (so that is the system there, not this repair) and 1 are specific to this repair.
Road salt and slush corrode exposed metal and seize moving parts, and freezing weather stiffens rubber, so repairs to exposed parts can follow harsh winters.
Are the parts for this repair getting more expensive, or only the labor?
The federal producer price index for new transmission and power train parts rose 13.5% from December 2019 to August 2026, while the consumer price index for motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together, rose 55.2% (BLS, national).
Prices of new transmission and power train parts, as shops buy them from makers, since December 2019, against consumer prices for motor vehicle repair. New transmission and power train parts: +13.5%; All motor vehicle parts: +17.4%; Motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together: +55.2%.
How much of a repair bill is labor and how much is parts?
In the 2017 Economic Census, transmission repair shops took 49.8% of their repair revenue from labor charges and 50.2% from parts installed, close to the 51.0% labor share of all auto repair shops (U.S. Census Bureau, national, 4,365 shops).
| Shop type (NAICS) | Labor charges | Parts installed | All revenue of the shop type | Establishments |
|---|---|---|---|---|

How many recalled cars are actually fixed, so should I check mine?
Across 5 NHTSA recalls that name differential filed 2015 to 2024, 74.8% of the 97,199 recalled vehicles had been repaired after 8 quarters, against 66.2% for all recalls, which leaves about 24,485 vehicles still carrying the defect.
What it shows: Mercedes-Benz 2023 is the largest at 93.7%, followed by Jeep 2020 at 77.5%; the smallest shown is Jeep 2023 at 66.1%.
If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 11 recall campaigns for parts matched to a differential repair since model year 2015, covering about 238,623 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

A typical differential repair, a seal or gasket on a rear differential, costs $130–$330 in our estimate. A fluid change runs $60–$130 and a full rebuild $250–$650, and a front differential costs a little more than a rear one ($143–$363 for the same seal job). The job on the quote moves the price more than anything else.
What does a differential repair estimate include?
Our default is a seal or gasket on a rear differential: $130–$330. That covers the part, the fluid and the shop's time for a leak fix. It does not cover other drivetrain parts the shop finds worn once the housing is open.
Read your quote for the job name first. "Differential repair" can mean a fluid change or a rebuild, and those are different prices.
How much does each differential job cost?
| Job (rear differential unless noted) | Parts | Labor | Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluid change | $20–$50 | $40–$80 | $60–$130 |
| Seal or gasket (default) | $50–$150 | $80–$180 | $130–$330 |
| Bearing, full rebuild | $100–$300 | $150–$350 | $250–$650 |
| Seal or gasket, front differential | $55–$165 | $88–$198 | $143–$363 |
Front differentials cost more because the labor and parts both run higher in the calculator. Pick your job, axle and shop type in the calculator above to see your own range.
Should you repair or replace a differential?
Repair fits a leak, a worn bearing or a noise caught early. Replacing the whole unit fits internal damage that a rebuild cannot fix, and it is priced separately.
Ask the shop: "What did you find that makes this a replacement and not a rebuild?" Ask to see the worn gears or bearings. If a quote jumps from a seal to a full replacement, get a second opinion before you approve it.
How do you know it's the differential, and how urgent is it?
Typical signs are a whining or grinding noise that changes with speed, a fluid leak near the axle, or a clunk when you turn. A leak is the cheap stage. Running low on fluid is what turns a seal job into a rebuild.
Treat a new noise as a this-week problem. Have a shop check the fluid level and condition before it grinds. A shop may also confuse it with the driveshaft or CV axle, so ask them how they ruled those out.
How do you get a fair quote?
Get the job name, the parts price and the labor hours in writing. Compare quotes for the same job, on the same axle, at the same kind of shop.
- Ask whether fluid is included in the price.
- Ask whether the quote covers only the leak or also bearings.
- Ask for the old parts back.
- Ask what happens to the price if they find more damage.
A diagnostic fee should be named separately and credited if you approve the work.
What does the estimate leave out?
Our range excludes a diagnostic fee, shop fees, taxes, towing and any other part the shop finds worn after opening the housing. It is an estimate for the job you select, not a quote for your car. The state map above shows how local price levels shift it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with a leaking differential?
For a short trip to a shop, usually yes if the fluid level is still good. Driving until it runs dry is how a seal job becomes a rebuild.
Is a differential fluid change worth doing?
It is the cheapest job on the list, and fresh fluid is what protects the gears and bearings the other jobs replace.
Why is my quote far higher than the calculator?
Check whether it is for a replacement, a different axle or a rebuild, and whether it adds diagnostic time or extra parts.
