What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($913)MiddleHigher-cost states ($1,163)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $1,163 and AR the lowest at $913, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
1,535 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
Which other parts do owners name in the same complaint?
Among the 1,535 owner complaints naming this part, strut is named in 38% of them, more than any other part.
Owners name the strut most often in the same complaint, which is not proof that one caused the other. Ask the shop whether it checked the strut too, so you are not quoted twice for one visit.
What did owners say they paid?
Half of the 23 owners who wrote a dollar amount gave $1,530 or less; one in ten wrote more than $3,500.
These are bills owners wrote down, often covering more than this one repair. They show how far a job can run; get written quotes for your own car.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
55 mph or faster leads at 46%.
Owners reported it most often at highway speed. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 1,535 owner complaints naming this part, crash is the outcome owners report most often.
What it shows: Crash reported is the largest at 49, followed by Towed at 46; the smallest shown is Death reported at 1.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 1,535 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2015 is the largest at 288 (19%), followed by 2016 at 165 (11%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 34 (2%).
Do shock or strut replacement problems track days per year that cross freezing, median station across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about shock or strut replacement run higher where days per year that cross freezing, median station is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that days per year that cross freezing, median station causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more days per year that cross freezing (low at or below 32f, high above 32f), median station; higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with days per year that cross freezing (low at or below 32f, high above 32f), median station.
What it shows: States with more days per year that cross freezing (low at or below 32f, high above 32f), median station tend to sit higher on the chart across 36 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most days per year that cross freezing, median station (Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, West Virginia, Kansas, Pennsylvania): reports of this repair run 34% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 9 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (Florida, California, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Arkansas, North Carolina): 5% below, and 2 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Nevada is among the highest in days per year that cross freezing, median station but reports below expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least days per year that cross freezing, median station runs 4% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 5% above, and the third with the most 24% above. It steps up steadily.
- For days per year that cross freezing, median station, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 17. Take out any single state and the days per year that cross freezing, median station pattern still holds.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar annual snowfall and the pattern keeps about 39% of its strength, so part of it may come from annual snowfall instead of days per year that cross freezing, median station.
Water seeps into pavement, freezes and thaws to break it into potholes, and every pothole hit bends rims and wears tires, suspension joints and steering parts.
Do shock or strut replacement problems track annual snowfall across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about shock or strut replacement run higher where annual snowfall is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that annual snowfall causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more annual snowfall (inches); higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with annual snowfall (inches).
What it shows: States with more annual snowfall (inches) tend to sit higher on the chart across 36 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most annual snowfall (Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Michigan, Colorado, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Connecticut, Pennsylvania): reports of this repair run 21% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 9 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (California, Florida, Louisiana, Arizona, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee): 4% below, and 3 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Wisconsin is among the highest in annual snowfall but reports below expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least annual snowfall runs 3% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 10% above, and the third with the most 18% above. It steps up steadily.
- For annual snowfall, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 14. Take out any single state and the annual snowfall pattern still holds.
- Weak spot: compare only states with similar days per year that cross freezing, median station and the pattern keeps about 26% of its strength, so part of it may come from days per year that cross freezing, median station instead of annual snowfall.
Road salt and slush corrode exposed metal and seize moving parts, and freezing weather stiffens rubber, so repairs to exposed parts can follow harsh winters.
Are the parts for this repair getting more expensive, or only the labor?
The federal producer price index for new steering and suspension parts rose 10.9% from December 2019 to August 2026, while the consumer price index for motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together, rose 55.2% (BLS, national).

If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 20 recall campaigns for parts matched to a shock or strut replacement since model year 2015, covering about 234,118 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
4 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
At our yearly check up, we just discovered our rear shocks need replacing at a cost of $1,100.00 a shock, 2,200 for the pair.
At approximately 55,000 miles the service tech found that all four struts were leaking and required $4,500 to repair and replace.
Imagine my shock when I was told it would cost $1,530.83 to repair.
I have now spent almost $1000 dollars on a new adjustable track bar, premium shocks and a dual steering stabilizer to try and remedy this issue.

Shock or strut replacement cost runs $688–$1,414 for a front pair of struts with an alignment, in our calculator. Shock absorbers alone are cheaper, at $262–$516 for a front pair. That's our estimate, so a quote far above it is a reason to ask what else is on the ticket.
Owners tell a higher story. Of the 2,982 owners who have told NHTSA about a shock or strut, the 44 who wrote down what they paid give a midpoint of $1,500, with a middle half of $733 to $2,850. This page shows where the gap comes from, what moves the price, and the recall and warranty check to run before you pay. Put your own car into the shock or strut replacement cost calculator for a range that fits it.
What is the typical shock or strut replacement cost?
The typical shock or strut replacement cost is $688–$1,414 for a front pair of struts, alignment included. That's the calculator's default, at a shop type in the middle of the range. Every setting moves it, as this table shows.
| What you change | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Default: front pair of struts + alignment | $688–$1,414 |
| Shock absorbers only, front pair | $262–$516 |
| Quick-strut assemblies, front pair + alignment | $680–$1,470 |
| Rear pair of struts + alignment | $650–$1,364 |
| Independent shop | $625–$1,330 |
| Dealership | $861–$1,645 |
These are ranges, not quotes. Your car, your zip code and the parts your shop picks all move the final number. Our methodology page explains where the figures come from.
Before you say yes, ask the shop to write down which parts are on the quote: the strut, the mount, the spring, and the alignment. Four line items are easier to compare than one total.
Why does shock or strut replacement cost so much more for struts?
A strut costs more because it does two jobs.
A shock only damps bounce. A strut also carries the weight of the car, holds the coil spring and acts as a pivot for steering, so the shop takes more apart and the part costs more. One competitor, honestmechanix.net, adds a warning worth repeating: a car has shocks or struts at each corner, not both. If a shop quotes you for both on the same axle, it says to get a second opinion.
Struts also usually mean an alignment. That's why our strut figures include one and our shock figure doesn't. If you'd like to price the alignment on its own, see what a wheel alignment costs.
Ask this: "Does my car have shocks or struts at this end, and is the alignment on the quote?" A shop that knows the car answers in one sentence.
Does a front or rear pair cost more?
A rear pair of struts estimates at $650–$1,364, against $688–$1,414 for the front. That's only about $38–$50 less, so the axle matters far less than the type of part.
The bigger question is whether your rear end even has struts. Many cars have struts in front and plain shock absorbers behind, and the rear job is then the cheaper one. Check the quote for the word "shock" or "strut" on each axle, and compare it with the table above.
Replacing one side alone rarely saves much. Most shops quote a pair, and one competitor, Vista Motion, says a pair keeps damping even from side to side. That's their claim, not ours, but it matches what most shops do.
Dealer or independent shop: who charges less?
An independent shop estimates at $625–$1,330 for a front pair of struts with an alignment, against $861–$1,645 at a dealership. The parts are similar. You're paying for the hourly rate.
Technician pay is the labor side of every repair price, and the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook is where those wages come from.
A dealer isn't always the wrong call. If your car has a recall or a warranty extension on the shock, the dealer may do it at no cost to you. Check that first, using the section on recalls below. If you're out of warranty and out of any recall, get one independent quote and one dealer quote and ask each: "What exactly is included?"
Of the 2,982 complaints, 1,444 mention a dealer and 116 an independent shop. That's about the venue owners were in when they wrote, not a verdict on quality.
Is a quick-strut cheaper than replacing the strut alone?
A front pair of quick-strut assemblies estimates at $680–$1,470, close to the default $688–$1,414. A quick-strut is a pre-assembled unit: strut, spring and top mount in one piece. The shop swaps the whole thing rather than compressing the old spring onto a new strut.
The two ranges overlap, so don't pay extra for the label. What matters is what comes with it. Honestmechanix says a quick-strut costs $150–$350 per strut for the part but saves labor time, and CarParts.com says a spring compressor is "don't try it at home" territory. Both point the same way: the labor saved offsets much of the higher part price.
Ask the shop which kind it's quoting and whether the mount and spring are new. If it's replacing only the strut cartridge and keeping the old spring and mount, the price should be lower, and you should know why.
Why do other sites quote different shock or strut replacement costs?
Published shock or strut replacement costs run from $300 to $2,500, because each site counts something different. Some price a pair of shocks, some a pair of struts, some a whole car. None of them shows its method, and one is from 2019.
| Source | Published range | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Car Talk | $500–$2,500 | Pair of shocks and struts; "budget around $1,000" for a mainstream car |
| RepairPal | Average for shock or strut replacement (search snippet) | |
| Honest Mechanix | $450–$900 | Per axle, parts, labor and alignment |
| EV Parts 4x4 | $300–$1,700 | Per axle, "at a shop" |
| Vista Motion | $394–$466 | A pair of traditional shock absorbers |
| Bridwell Auto Center | $316–$416 | One shock or strut assembly, "for the US in 2019" |
| CalcScrape estimate | $688–$1,414 | Front pair of struts + alignment |
Set side by side, they look like a contradiction. They aren't. Read what each is counting before you use it against a quote.
What should you do before you pay for shocks or struts?
A shock or strut replacement cost is fair when you can see what's in it. Here's the short version.
- Today: check your VIN for recalls and warranty extensions on the shock or strut.
- This week: get an independent quote and a dealer quote, and ask each to say whether it's shocks or struts, a pair or four, and whether the alignment is included.
- Before you say yes: ask to see the old parts, and ask why anything beyond the pair is on the ticket.
The calculator gives you the range to hold a quote up against. Use it for your car, then take the number to the shop. No account, no email, and nothing to buy.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace shocks or struts?
About $688–$1,414 for a front pair of struts with an alignment in our calculator. A front pair of shock absorbers alone is $262–$516. Your car and your shop move the number.
Is it cheaper to replace shocks or struts?
Shocks. Our front pair of shock absorbers estimates at $262–$516, against $688–$1,414 for struts with an alignment. Which you need depends on your car, not your budget.
Do I need an alignment after replacing struts?
Usually, yes. New struts can change ride height and alignment settings, which is why our strut estimates include one. Ask the shop whether your car needs it, and see the shock absorber replacement cost calculator for the shock-only price without one.
Can I replace just one shock or strut?
You can, but shops quote pairs, because damping should match side to side. A single unit saves less than you'd think once labor and the alignment are counted.
Is a dealership or an independent shop cheaper?
An independent shop. Our estimate is $625–$1,330 against $861–$1,645 at a dealership for the same front strut job. Check for a recall or warranty extension before paying either.
Can I drive with a bad strut?
Briefly and carefully, if the steering feels normal and nothing is broken. A car that bounces, dives when you brake or wanders at speed should be looked at this week.
