Volkswagen Atlas owners filed 1,967 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for model years 2015–2025 (see the Car Problem Index for all 60 models), and NHTSA lists 47 recall campaigns for the same years. The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas drew the most complaints (478); across all years, owners complain most about electrical system (24% of complaints).

Key findings

  • Worst model year: 2019, with 478 complaints, led by air bags (141) and 12 recalls.
  • Complaints vs recalls: Electrical system drew 478 complaints but 2 recalls, so for most of these owners the repair falls to warranty or their own pocket, not a free recall fix.
  • Stop-driving recalls: 2 recalls told owners to stop driving until repaired (20V712000, 18V369000).
  • Spike years, compared with a typical model year: 2018 (2.5 times as many complaints), 2019 (2.6 times as many complaints), 2021 (2.6 times as many complaints).
  • Earliest-failing area: transmission / powertrain complaints came at a median 2k mi.
  • Fire and crash reports: 5 complaints mention a fire and 38 a crash, with 58 injuries reported.

What Volkswagen Atlas owners report

Owners’ own words; dollar figures are what they reported.

Electrical system

Both low beam headlights went out within two weeks of each other and the vehicle just hit 100,000 miles. Dealership states that replacing the entire headlight assembly is the only fix and will cost $3,000. So now both headlights (safety issue) are out and the vehicle cannot be driven safely. Other vw Atlas vehicles are having the same issue around 50-60K miles.

2018 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11706755

LED daytime running lights went out a few weeks ago at the same time, then yesterday both headlights went out at the same time as well. There have been no damages or wrecks in my vehicle and I am the only owner. There are no warning lights and according to the myvw app, everything is fine. I cannot see well while driving at night anymore and this will cost me $2,000 to replace at only 60,000 miles.

Related recalls: 21V616000 (2021): A horn or starter that remains activated for an extended period of time can overheat, increasing the risk of fire. 18V824000 (2018–2019): If the driver is not notified by an audible noise that the key is left in the ignition, it can increase the risk of vehicle theft or crash.

478 owners reported electrical system problems; the alternator / electrical repair cost calculator shows what the fix costs where you live.

Air bags

The airbag error light in the vehicle came on. I took it to the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. They are charging $300.+ per hour to repair the issue. The vehicle has never been in an accident. The airbag has never been deployed.

2019 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11754957

The front passenger occupant detection system (pods) sensor wiring has failed in my 2024 Volkswagen atlas. This failure has disabled the passenger airbag, significantly increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Vw has advised not to allow any passengers to ride in the front passenger seat until vehicles with this error are repaired.

2024 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11744658

Related recalls: 24V464000 (2021–2024): A deactivated passenger air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash. 23V671000 (2019): The driver's side impact air bag could deploy improperly or detach in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. 23V215000 (2018–2021): A deactivated passenger air bag increases the risk of injury during a crash.

Engine

Vehicle stalled and shut off 5 times while driving in past month. Took it to vw dealership. They said low voltage on battery could make the stop/start feature not able to restart car. They also stated fuel injector #3 error was showing on diagnostic machine. After replacing battery, spark plugs, and gasket ($2300), dealership says that fuel injector error still showing and would cost $1400 to replace.

2021 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11573820

On the week of 10/13/2025, I had an oil sensor alert appear after a recent oil change. I took the vehicle in on 10/30/2025 for a diagnostic check and was told the oil separator sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. After the service was completed, the total was $906.42 of which I paid $580.99 out of pocket post my extended warranty claim payment.

2022 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11722862

Related recalls: 22V753000 (2022–2023): A damaged engine can result in engine failure and a stall, increasing the risk of a crash. If the engine failure causes an oil leak, it can increase the risk of a fire. 25V100000 (2024–2025): A loose engine cover that contacts hot surfaces in the engine compartment can melt, increasing the risk of a fire. 23V593000 (2024): A damaged engine can result in engine failure and a stall, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, engine failure may cause an oil leak which can increase the risk of a fire.
