Ford Edge owners filed 5,190 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for model years 2015–2025 (see the Car Problem Index for all 60 models), and NHTSA lists 26 recall campaigns for the same years. The 2017 Ford Edge drew the most complaints (1,351); across all years, owners complain most about engine (36% of complaints).

Key findings

  • Worst model year: 2017, with 1,351 complaints, led by engine (685) and 8 recalls.
  • Complaints vs recalls: Engine drew 1,871 complaints but one recall, so for most of these owners the repair falls to warranty or their own pocket, not a free recall fix.
  • Over-the-air fixes: recall 22V151000 can be repaired by a software update, without a dealer visit (1 of 26).
  • Spike years, compared with a typical model year: 2017 (1.9 times as many complaints).
  • Earliest-failing area: electrical system complaints came at a median 26k mi.
  • Fire and crash reports: 13 complaints mention a fire and 115 a crash, with 127 injuries reported.

What Ford Edge owners report

Owners’ own words; dollar figures are what they reported.

Engine

Eco boost engine causes coolant to leak into cylinders causing significant damage and engine failure. Check engine light was on and vehicle is a 2018 with only 28,000 miles. Vehicle is at Ford dealer now so this has been confirmed as they want me to pay $9200 for the repair. Research shows numerous tsb’s and consumer complaints as well as a class action law suit regarding this issue.

2018 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11615893

My 2016 Ford with only 56,210 miles has developed a critical engine failure. The engine block due to a manufactuing design flaw has caused the coolant to leak into one of the cylinders. Dealership informed me I need a new motor at the cost of $7300.00. Ford will not stand behind the repair due to the age of my vehicle. It's in excellent condition other than the defective engine block.

Transmission / powertrain

Vehicle has 950000 miles. Started hesitating and shuddering while changing gears at 50K and has progressively gotten worse. Has been to two dealers with diagnosis of transmission and/or torque converter replacement. Estimates between $4-8.5K to replace/repair. Quick internet search shows that this is a very common and known issue to ford. Why has there not been a recall on this vehicle for these problems?

2020 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11595884

Recently, the car started shuddering at 25-45 mph. We took it to the Ford dealer for an evaluation and were told that the torque converter and transmission are very damaged. They both need to be replaced at a cost of $10,000. We have only 61500 miles on the car. Further research has indicated that if we were to keep driving it, it could result in sudden failure, loss of driving power and possibly loss of control

2019 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11749563

Related recalls: 21V011000 (2020–2021): If the rear drive unit seizes, there may be a loss of drive and/or a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. 20V550000 (2019–2020): Missing or loose bolts on the start stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission fluid leak and may progress to a loss of transmission function. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire. 22V413000 (2015–2018): A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Engine and cooling

Head gasket is bad causing coolant leak into cylinder 2. Causing engine to overheat and not run properly. Ford dealership told me engine needs to be replaced. The engine design is bad and the issue will just continue without a newly designed engine block (2019 or newer). They want me to pay $8,500 to replace their poorly designed engine. Car is at 136,000 miles. Most of which are highway miles.

2017 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11549928

The heating in the car was not working. Then one morning the car started overheating and the check engine light came on. Taken to dealer to find the coolant was low and that it was leaking into cylinders 2 and 3 and now the engine needed to be replaced. This is an $8000 plus repair on a car I just bought for $20000 with under 75000 miles.
