What Ford F-150 owners report
Owners’ own words; dollar figures are what they reported.
Transmission / powertrain
I have a 10 speed automatic transmission that intermittently works in 2nd and third gears. It began doing this at 60,000 miles. I'm not sure if it is the adaptive learning transmission control module (TCM) or the transmission itself. Ford dealer wants over $10,000 to replace transmission. The car is unsafe when pulling into traffic and it won't accelerate half the time.
2018 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11762568
Vehicle would stall in between gears. Almost got hit in side. The transmission has shifted rough and hard shift. I took to dealer and the computer was reset at 55,000 miles. I just had to replace transmission at 77,000 miles. The repair cost was $8,059.00 before taxes. I was told 4th and 8th gear the cluthes were out. This seems to be a known problem because the replacement transmission has a different valve body.

Related recalls: 26V375000 (2018): Unintended gear selection may cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction, increasing the risk of crash or injury. 18V213000 (2017–2018): Despite the transmission shift lever being placed in 'Park' and the instrument panel display indicating 'Park,' the vehicle may roll away after it has been exited if the parking brake has not been applied, increasing the risk of injury or a crash. 18V214000 (2018): If the gear shift cable clip becomes unseated or dislodged, the gear shift lever position may indicate that the transmission is in 'Park' when it may be in a different gear. Additionally, despite selecting 'Park', if the parking brake is not applied before the vehicle is exited, the vehicle may roll. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash.

Engine
At approximately 62,000 miles, a loud noise started from the passenger side of the engine, car was taken to the local Ford dealership for repairs, and it was determined that the bolts for the exhaust manifold broke which was causing fumes to enter the passenger compartment. Repairs were made at my cost of $6000, and calls were made to Ford corporate for monetary help but they declined any help at all!
2016 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11638875
At 101,000 miles, the engine lost power, check engine light came on, and service transmission light came on. This happened while pulling a trailer up a mountain, slowing the truck rapidly, and becoming a hazard to surrounding interstate traffic. The dealer diagnosed the problem as the timing chain, and replaced it and all related components at a cost of $4500.

Electrical system
The apim failed when the vehicle had less than 25,000 miles on it. It was paid for by an extended vehicle warranty, instead of being paid by Ford for bad equipment. It is now back in the shop and they want to charge almost $400 to provide a software update to the equipment that was just replaced. I had the same issue on a 2020 Lincoln aviator.
2020 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11586022
Backup camera failed/does not show anything on dash screen. Cannot see behind me when backing up. The dealer service center confirmed the failure and ordered a new wiring harness at my cost of $450.00. The dealer said the wiring harness for the camera needs to be replaced. The camera worked sporadically and then failed. There is now a message on my dash screen saying the camera does not work.
