Hyundai Palisade owners filed 2,302 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for model years 2015–2025 (see the Car Problem Index for all 60 models), and NHTSA lists 13 recall campaigns for the same years. The 2020 Hyundai Palisade drew the most complaints (534); across all years, owners complain most about brakes (18% of complaints).

Key findings

  • Worst model year: 2020, with 534 complaints, led by engine (130) and 5 recalls.
  • Complaints vs recalls: Brakes drew 417 complaints but 2 recalls, so for most of these owners the repair falls to warranty or their own pocket, not a free recall fix.
  • Stop-driving recalls: 3 recalls told owners to park outside until repaired (25V291000, 23V526000, 22V633000).
  • Earliest-failing area: automatic emergency braking / collision warning complaints came at a median 2k mi.
  • Fire and crash reports: 14 complaints mention a fire and 56 a crash, with 59 injuries and 1 death reported.

What Hyundai Palisade owners report

Owners’ own words; dollar figures are what they reported.

Brakes

A lot of the time I go to press on my brakes, my vehicle skids as if I'm sliding on ice but we are in dead of summer. It makes a crunchy noise almost and the pedal vibrates. It's a 2024 and has less than 10,000 miles and has been doing it since I got the vehicle with only 500 miles.

2024 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11615179

This car was just purchased brand new in april 2025. The ABS system is randomly malfunctioning. It causes my braking distance to change and I am concerned with the braking of my vehicle. The ABS system engages like I am slipping on ice or snow. It has happened 4 times on dry pavement during the summer. The dealer is unable to duplicate the issue and therefore cannot do any repairs to fix the issue.

Related recalls: 23V415000 (2023): A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop, increasing the risk of a crash. 21V840000 (2021): Reduced braking performance can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Seat belts

I was unable to use my seatbelt because the end that accepts the strap, would not allow the seatbelt to click in to the device. I had to drive without a seatbelt several miles. I tried probably 20 times to get it to click in before giving up. My husband was able to somehow reset the mechanism, and it appears to be working fine at the moment.

2021 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11633146

The seat belt for the driver seat spontaneously unbuckles while the car is in motion. After fastening the buckle, the buckle disengages while driving, with no warning or provocation. This has happened 3 times on the driver seat and once on the 2nd row captain chair. The dealership has offered to inspect and replace all the buckles. The car has 10K miles and is 8 months old.

2023 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11561734

Related recalls: 25V607000 (2020–2025): Seat belt buckles that fail to latch may not properly restrain occupants in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Engine

The weather became cold outside. After first frost overnight, an oil leak started underneath the hood next to the front passenger side tire. Got in be serviced 11/19. Told the plastic piece to oil housing assembly cracked and had 9 other palisades in for same exact issue. No warning lamps. Cost $519 to replace part.

2020 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11708539

The engine has been burning oil since last may and Hyundai has been putting me through the ringer of hoops to get it fixed. After 11 months and almost 30 visits to the dealership, they are finally replacing the engine. The dealership has told me this is a known issue and I know of others who have the same car and are having the same issue. Someone needs to hold them responsible.

Related recalls: 24V106000 (2024): A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash. A hole in the engine block increases the risk of a fire.
