Key findings
- Worst model year: 2019, with 877 complaints, led by fuel system (255) and 7 recalls.
- Complaints vs recalls: Electrical system drew 775 complaints but 2 recalls, so for most of these owners the repair falls to warranty or their own pocket, not a free recall fix.
- Spike years, compared with a typical model year: 2019 (2.9 times as many complaints), 2020 (2.1 times as many complaints).
- Earliest-failing area: fuel system complaints came at a median 1k mi.
- Fire and crash reports: 124 complaints mention a fire and 289 a crash, with 241 injuries and 5 deaths reported.

Electrical system
I have had a service engine message on my dash that would return within seconds of my hitting the button to signal I received the message. When I took the vehicle to the dealership I was told it was a leaking coolant bypass valve and would need to be replaced. I was told the cost would be $215 plus three hours of labor. The final cost was $240 for the parts and $709 for the labor.
2020 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11607952
The multimedia dashboard is completely blank. Not able to use sound, GPS, music, etc. Cant set time or any adjustments to vehicle. This seems to be a manufacturing issue. Dealer said there is nothing they can do about it. Was told will need to pay $1600 to replace it. Don't know how long a new won will last. Can't keep spending $1600 everytime the electrical system malfunctions. Please help.

Engine
Engine maintenance required, contact dealer alert displaying to replace coolant bypass valve. Vehicle has 38,144 miles. Internet search of this issue has been reported by several consumers with vehicles less then 4 years old. Not covered under warranty and quoted at $700- ridiculous!
2020 model-year owner, NHTSA complaint 11590086
On may 13, 2023, ‘engine maintenance required-visit your dealer’ warning appeared on my console. I immediately brought the vehicle to the Toyota dealer. I was told the coolant bypass valve went bad. This was at roughly 45,000 miles. I had previously purchased a ‘no deductible extended warranty’ from this same Toyota dealer. Now they tell me this ‘valve’ is not covered under warranty.

Fuel system
The car has stalled twice out of the blue. It was taken to the shop, and they said the vapor lock had gas in it. They wanted to charge $1000. The excuse was when it is hot outside you run the risk of gas getting into the vapor lock every time you fill up... That is bull. It stalled in motion twice on a city street.
